The nation of Panama has looked at their rising crime rate and increased gang activity, and has decided that the only think that will stop bad guys with guns is law-abiding citizens with guns.

Panama’s decision has to be chilling to supporters of citizen control worldwide, as they see another nation embracing the reality that centralized control does nothing to protect the citizenry from crime.

Saw a headline in Illinois that stated:
“Even though violent crime in decline more people applying for concealed carry permits”.
The media spins everything.

I was there in the 90’s. From the article, I gathered that Panama outlawed the import of firearms in 2012.

I do remember that firearms were very expensive at the few gun shops I visited. Mine were shipped in (and out!) by Uncle Sam.

Correct. It was for comparative ballistics in the event of a shooting.

Panama Gun Laws:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1436566_Everything_you_need_to_know_about_Panama_Gun_Laws.html

Sawed off Shotguns and Short Barreled Rifles – These are legal in Panama.

Pee in a cup and give a dna sample

Lots of different perspectives on country safety. City bad, country good.

Better gun laws than many countries.

‘Gun Culture’ is leftist spin on pro-second amendment Americans. Bob Owens should stop using their vernacular. Now.

“Better gun laws than many countries.”

I remember thinking the same thing when I lived there. Including the US, sadly enough.

The devil is always in the details. Celebration should be muted until there is clarity about what this gun liberalization means. According to the article, it just allows guns to be imported into Panama. That is a long way from having an armed citizenry.

While he complained about forged gun permits, there is no indication that permits will no longer be needed.

“In Panama, only legal residents may own and/or carry guns, as opposed to visitors and tourists. Therefore a foreigner can apply for gun ownership once he or she has satisfied immigration requirements and obtained legal residence. Since Panama has neither an army nor the equivalent of the N.R.A., gun ownership rules differ sensibly from U.S. regulations. To begin with there are no gun fairs... you can only purchase a gun from a handful of authorized dealers, and the choices are very limited - not to mention prices are about double what you would expect to pay. Unless you prefer to place a special order, which is going to delay the process by a number of months, you can purchase a gun under five minutes, the time it takes to process your credit card. This is however where the similarity ends...

Thanks for the post. I was wondering what we would do with our guns when we take our sabbatical abroad in Central America.

I’d do some serious checking before packin’ heat anywhere in Central America. Or anyplace out of the country.

You must post your postcards from abroad. Put us wannabe expats on your ping list. Are you going with International Living. I get their daily blasts. I wanted Portugal until the EU fell apart. (Nice article for those who can overlook what is happening now. Previous socialist president is now part of a refugee program for UN, I think. He is salivating over the invaders Portugal will get, like prospective adoptive parents.

Our schedule is up in the air. Hubby got a consulting gig in Panama, but it may or may not be necessary to travel there. Setting up living quarters in Boquete last week, but nothing firm. The major reason is because living in Arizona, we are dying for sweater weather in the highlands.

68° F to 73° yearround with a rainy season

If you go to this developers community on the beach in Nicaragua, I really want to know your impression.

Will do...on the post cards.

We are traveling alone, the two of us, but we do have contacts through International Living in San Juan del Sur, Granada and Matagalpa - and we are spending about 4 days in each area.

And yes, the highlands of Central America are really nice....no need for heat or AC ever....very healthy climate. We tend to be beach bums though, so we’re also looking on the Pacific Coast. Hotter than the highlands, but never need long pants and we love the water, fishing, boating, sunsets.

Panama very nice too, and you can get by in Panama with only English. That’s important to many ex pats.

A Nun, she came through and negotiated my release, gave me a card with directions on how to donate to her cause to help get others out and take care of those in Prison that can’t get out.

I sent her a weeks pay and felt guilty
