If you were in Washington watching the Republican debate last night, you might have felt a small tilt in the floor, or heard the plates rattling gently in their cupboards.
That was the sound of the Republican establishment shifting its collective weight away from Jeb Bush and inching a little bit closer to their best available alternative.
And no, its not Ben Carson or Carly Fiorina.
Not to overstate the crisis here, because one poll can change everything at this stage of a race, but the way I saw it, last night was another minor disaster for Bush. He seemed, yet again, oddly tentative and squirmy, the earnest student body president shoved aside by the boorish quarterback at the pep rally.
That performance probably didnt do much to help Bush among the millions of Republicans who tuned in, especially in the early primary states. But make no mistake: His most important audience right now is the one that pushed him onto that stage in the first place.
Because if Bush has a natural base in the party, its the powerful assemblage of Washington Republicans politicians, theorists, lobbyists and lawyers who can be counted on to unify every four years around a known, governing candidate. Thats why he entered the race as the presumed favorite despite an eight-year absence from office. Thats why his Super-PAC rolled up more money than the cash-counters at Trump Taj Mahal.

Yes, she talks a good game. She talked herself into several high-powered jobs and then, when asked to perform, failed.
She might be a great president, but at this point in history we cannot take a chance on another president with no proven success background.
It’s a small vacuum.
[”Kasich did SO bad last night”]
Yes, and at one point the camera panned on him and he was flustered. I believe it was after an exchange with Cruz. (It’s all a blur now.)
Appearing discombobulated is the bane of a candidacy. He never had a chance, but that sealed his fate IMO.
Heres the Bizarre Moment Jeb Bush Stood on His Tip-Toes For Group Shot at GOP Debate

Who better to follow obama, who sucks...
I’m a Trump / Cruz guy, but I have to agree with you, Fiorina won the Debate. She was on top of her game. She was somewhat Thatcher-esq. But, I still think that she has some RINO blood in those veins.
Actually Trump and Bush got more time than she did. And she was interrupted by the Moderator numerous times. (Jake Tapper did a crappy job.)
Yeah, I think Kasich or Rubio. Don’t forget Rubio is a loyal stooge who can also take Florida, and the establishment is counting on that state heavily.
Good tagline material!
Poor country!
We’ve gone from “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too”
to
“Tippy-toe and taller too”...
Who cares???? If Yeb leaves so can he=is supporters. His views are closer to Hillary than any conservative I know. Take them all and just become dems already
Fiorina was not at HP because she wanted to run a large computer firm and make it better.
Fiorina was at HP because she was trying to prove that using female Affirmative Action she could become head of a large firm, even if only for a short while.
Come on; let’s be fair here. ALL of them had rehearsed deliveries. I’m a Cruz guy, but I wish to goodness he would quit saying (5 times every Debate) “I’m proud to have been the one who did this...... I’m proud that I was the only Senator to do that.... I’m proud of this bill I Introduced.......” I love Ted, but, I wish he’d change the CD.
Carly did terrible, all her answers were canned. You want Carly to do to the USA what she did to HP? Really?
Your Post #13 is exactly right.
If you like her, go ahead and vote for her. As for me, I am suspicious of her. I see her as an insider uniparty stooge assigned to play the part of outsider. In fact, the way the Rat media is fawning all over her makes it a bit too obvious. Listening to the media gush I had flashbacks to the establishment’s over-the-top praise for that tax-cheat Timothy Geithner when he was being pushed for Sec. of Treasury.
As I said, if you like her, vote for her, but she won’t get my vote.
Yes, and what’s with that weird thing Kasich does with his mouth! He makes this ugly lip stretching move at the end of every sentence. Yikes!
And plenty of Marxism/socialism too.
