When Ahmed Mohamed went to his high school in Irving, Texas, Monday, he was so excited. A teenager with dreams of becoming an engineer, he wanted to show his teacher the digital clock he'd made from a pencil case.
The 14-year-old's day ended not with praise, but punishment, after the school called police and he was arrested. A photo shows Ahmed, wearing a NASA t-shirt, looking confused and upset as he's being led out of school in handcuffs.
"They arrested me and they told me that I committed the crime of a hoax bomb, a fake bomb," the freshman later explained to WFAA after authorities released him.
Irving Police spokesman Officer James McLellan told the station, "We attempted to question the juvenile about what it was and he would simply only tell us that it was a clock."
The teenager did that because, well, it was a clock, he said.

Outrage over the incident -- with many saying the student was profiled because he's Muslim -- spread on social media as #IStandWithAhmed started trending worldwide on Twitter with more than 100,000 tweets Tuesday morning. The school's Facebook page is roiling with sharp criticism of the way the teen was treated, and the hashtag #engineersforahmed is gaining popularity.
President Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and thousands of others are showing support for Ahmed.
"Cool clock, Ahmed," Obama tweeted. "Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great."
The President would like the teen to join him and other scientists next month for the White House's annual Astronomy Night, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.

However, once it was established that it was just a clock, that should have been the end of it, instead of making the kid do the perp walk in cuffs. Irving probably just bought itself a very expensive lawfare suit from CAIR/ACLU.
Pencil case?
Quite possibly one of the stupidest quotes I have ever seen from a police officer.
The kid and his parents need to lighten up. He’ll have one HECK of a story to tell his progeny.
Old news. He’s been released, not charged and on his way to visit with Obie from Nairobi.
Really? And what would YOUR attitude be if YOUR son or daughter was harassed and cuffed by the police for absolutely nothing. Would you “lighten up”?
Hey, these people can’t even tell the difference between boys and girls. If they say it’s a pencil case, we are expected to believe it is a pencil case.
I wonder if I was to copy that and take it to the airport what the TSA would say when I told them it is a clock.
Notice that when CNN (and other propaganda organs) perceive a muslim (or other victim classes) to be a “victim”, they will splash his race or religious identity in the headline...
But when they are seen as perps, no one knows what they are.
Looks like a future ISIS soldier.
Come on! They’ll look back at this and laugh in 10 years.
I say it radicalizes this kid even more.
So what would have happened if he tried to board a plane with that “pencil case”?
I can certainly tell from the photo what the cops' identity is...
I see the perp (future terrorist) is wearing a shirt with the NASA symbol. Looks like hussein’s mooselimb outreach for that once-proud agency has been quite effective.
I’m not unaware or unmindful of the dangers that unrestricted immigration pose to the West, but this kid sounds like he was born here of immigrant parents, and was showing off his handiwork, rather than hiding it away for Jihad Day at the Mall or something.
This sounds like more idiotic overreaction from school administrators who can’t distinguish between a Pop-Tart and an operable firearm.
If my kid took something that looked like a bomb to school, my first words to him would be, “What the hell did you think would happen?” Small kids get cuffed and stuffed for bringing a toy soldier to school. This kid gets to meet the President. (Even if it is Obama)
