A member of the Immaculata (Somerville, N.J.) High School football team required 10 stitches after being struck in the head by a defensive lineman for Linden (N.J.) High School on Friday.

Harry Frezza and Greg Tufaro of myCentralJersey.com reported that the Linden player, who was flagged but not ejected, grabbed the helmet off the Immaculata player and hit him in the head with it.

I agree. Clearly not accidental and should be at least 2nd degree assault (felony - assault with a deadly weapon). No different than hitting someone in the head with a bottle or pipe.

Back before integration, you know the bad apple in the barrel deal, we used to go watch the black high school teams play football. It almost always erupted into a brawl on the field with player bashing each other with helmets. Very entertaining....... and insightful.

I heard a report on the news this morning that Immaculata contacted Linden school to see what they were doing about it. Said they were giving him their most serious punishment. A 10 day suspension and missing TWO games.

I recently retired from teaching and know there are more serious consequences although 10 days is the most they can give, next step is expulsion.
