‘Unloaded’ guns kill a lot of people. People who would still be around if they religiously followed the four gun safety rules.
Trying to commit suicide by shooting yourself in body armor isn’t going to be successful.
Deception: first shot intentionally at body armor to make it look like it was not suicide, second shot a slow killing shot.
“The two shots were midsection, one struck body armor, one was lethal.”
Typical suicide, shoot yourself once in the vest, then another one a little lower./
This is a scuffle and they gained control of his gun.
Most likely explanation for sure, but it is an investigators job to look at all possibilities. If you found he had no life insurance, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and had a month to live, was hiding it from his family, and the department had a “line of duty” policy in place for him it might change things.
The shot striking body armor argues, at least tangentially, against suicide. Who commits suicide by shooting oneself center mass while wearing body armor?

Occam’s razor.
Amazing we have some people that feel this was a suicide for insurance,. Too much TV/movies.
Suicide clauses usually drop after the first year, most, in fact.
So, he shoot myself twice, once on purpose into the body armor and the second shot to the gut—very painful and not at all certain he will die, and takes a long time in agony, unlike a shot to the head — quick, clean and fast.
He was killed.
Not a suicide.
I never said I believe it was a suicide, so don’t put words in my mouth please. I said it was the Coroner’s duty (yes, it is in his job description) to provide a thorough investigation for purposes of law enforcement, the family, and insurers. I said it was MOST LIKELY that he was killed by someone struggling for the weapon, but for purposes of an investigation that is not good enough, they need to look at all angles. Recent fallout with business partners, wife having an affair, mob hit, and yes depression/mental illness, substance abuse, terminal illness.
According to the story they found the three men matching the description that had shown up on security cameras in the area, and cleared all three.
According to the story the gun was found near the body.
They were reporting earlier that someone elses DNA was found on the gun, whatever happened with that?
Or is the survivors pension larger than the retirement pension? But the only way that makes sense would be if the officer was terminally ill and knew it.
I agree that the high probability is that he was killed by an assailant. I was just pointing out how a determined person *could* kill themselves that way.
That said, there are a surprising number of nailgun suicides each year, and those aren’t exactly quick and clean.
“I never said I believe it was a suicide, so dont put words in my mouth please.”
Don’t think I did as my reply was general in nature. So, perhaps I could have been more clear? Who knows, but it was not my intention to put words in your mouth.
