The why is simple.

Carson is the last refuge for the people that are abandoning Bush, conservatives that dont like Trump, and the only person near Trump enough for the few supporters of the remaining candidates to latch onto and feel like they are backing someone that they think has a chance.

Carson wants illegals made guest workers, says he would have arrested the 300 lb giant Michael Brown not shoot him (if that had been possible it would have been done), wants to decide who can own what guns by where they live and this is who should be President??

I don't get it: people won't vote for Trump who is a top businessman but will vote for a top surgeon who seems like he's on high doses of Atavan when he speaks. I don't get it. He's already made weird rumblings about black issues which remind me of Colin Powell at his worst. To be frank, like my attitude after the reign of Mayor Dinkins, it'll be a long time before I vote for another black candidate.
