When it comes to garbage, the city of Seattle has launched a waste war.
Nine full-time solid waste inspectors have been hired as part of a controversial program to check city trash to make sure people are recycling. Additionally, contracted waste haulers have been effectively deputized as trash police, given the authority to tag bins when people fail to recycle and compost enough.
The program is now the subject of a lawsuit, as residents fume over what some call an intrusive government program.
I understand people have noble goals, said Keli Carender, who got tagged two weeks in a row, an offense that soon could bring a fine. But at some point we have to say, you cant violate my rights to achieve this noble goal.
Carender is among 14,000 residential and commercial customers this year to get tagged. The sticker warns them that more than 10 percent of their trash content should have been recycled or put into compost bins.

Vote for leftists then complain when they make you eat garbage. Smart.
I thought they were being overrun with Californians.
What to they care if their landfills fail — 50 years from now there won’t be any Washingtonians left.
Can’t do it, of course, but it would be fun to put die pacts in the trash. But how to target the inspectors and not the regular trash haulers; oh well.
I understand people have noble goals
WRONG! Their goals are control through coercion and force. Nothing noble there.
My conservative daughter lives in Seattle and thinks the law is bullshite.
Yep, liberals have no qualms about using and abusing the power of government to implement their totalitarian goals.
Unchecked liberalism inevitably leads to tyranny i.e. leftism. Liberals can’t help themselves...they have a tyranny gene inside them bursting to manifest itself. If not stopped, petty fascists checking garbage bins will be the least of their problems.
Exactly. Orwell had it right: the purpose of power is power.
I know a couple of control freak liberals who would probably kill for the job of being able to go through other people’s garbage for the slightest anything deemed improper.
Wake me when the shooting starts. This crap is all going to end badly someday whether it is trash gun or some other form of control.
Yes, but think of the jobs this creates. With watchers to watch the watchers...and Minitrue is hiring...
Oh, poor Seattle! You got what you wished for. Go for the communists and what you get is the collective rule and in the toilet you go. Wait until they have toilet inspectors.
England does this and they will refuse to pick up the trash if they think it is too heavy (they use mechanical pickers) and you have to sort it the way they want. They even have trackers imbedded in the trash can.
It will later be brought to the same dump.
Margaret Thatcher's statement about socialism being great until they run out of other people's money comes to mind. All the money spent hiring the petty fascist garbage inspectors is money stolen from the tax-payers.
It's like when someone mentioned to Milton Friedman that the Chinese had figured out how to keep people working with their jobs programs. The Chinese were keeping many people employed by using shovels to build dams and other projects rather than using powered machines. Friedman replied that if total unemployment was what the Chinese wanted, they should give all the workers teaspoons to excavate the dirt rather than shovels.
By the way, I do realize the sarcasm in your original response.
Fascists are fascists. It is what they do.
Sheryl Crow - “Now, I don’t want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required,”
Muzlims killing and conspiring and illegals raping and killing and we’re looking at trash. Perfect.
Our garbage men have become garbage Nazis, gleefully inspecting our trash for violations of ambiguous regulations.
