Barack Obama will not stay at New York’s Waldorf Astoria during the UN general assembly this month after the hotel was bought by a Chinese insurance firm.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama and the US delegation would stay at the nearby New York Palace Hotel. “There are a range of considerations that influence where the president will stay when he’s not at the White House,” Earnest said.
“Those considerations include everything from available space to cost and to security.”
Earnest would not say whether the Chinese acquisition of the Astoria had raised concerns about possible espionage. Anbang Insurance Group bought the landmark luxury hotel in late 2014 for $1.95bn.

I’m probably the only one on FR who will say this, but honestly the money thing doesn’t bother me that much. Ronald Reagan stayed in the Waldorf every time he went to New York, even after he left office. Herbert Hoover and Dwight Eisenhower both loved th hotel so much they moved in after they retired from public life.
The President of the United States is our head of state. A Motel 6 isn’t compatible with the dignity of the office. That said, security is an issue. I think they had to move once the Chicoms bought the place.

President Obama is spending this weekend in New York City, where he’ll attend a Democratic fundraiser tonight and enjoy some quality time with his teenage daughters, Malia and Sasha.
