Inside Ethel Kennedy’s cruel neglect of her troubled kids
NY Post ^ | 14 Sep 2015 | Maureen Callahan

Since Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination on June 6, 1968, his widow, Ethel, has been his torchbearer. Unlike her late sister-in-law, Jackie, she never remarried, never sought a path or identity that was hers alone. She held herself up as the martyr, the good Catholic widow left to raise 11 children alone, the empress of Hickory Hill.

She was content to be the other Kennedy widow, the domesticated antidote to the glamorous, globe-trotting Jackie.

Today, Ethel Kennedy is 87, the clan’s de facto matriarch — a dubious position given the neglect shown toward her own children.

In his new book, “RFK Jr: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Dark Side of the Dream,” author Jerry Oppenheimer delves into Bobby’s upbringing — or lack thereof — to understand why the scion of our greatest political family has never accomplished much. Oppenheimer contrasts Bobby’s upbringing to that of John F. Kennedy Jr.

“John, after his father’s death, was brought up by a controlling and domineering mother, but one who obsessively looked out for his care and well-being,” he writes. “Bobby, after his father’s death, was essentially given up by his angry, widowed mother.”

I don't blame her. She had 11 children all under fourteen. As for Bobby Jr, sounds like he always was a punk.

David died of an overdose in 1984. Another son, Michael, made headlines in 1997 for having an affair with his teen baby sitter. Months later, he died playing football on skis, hitting a tree. In 2012, Ethel’s son Doug was caught on camera kicking a nurse in a hospital elevator. (He was acquitted.)

In 1994, Bobby divorced Emily. His new girlfriend, Mary Richardson, was six months pregnant. His marriage to Richardson was tumultuous, and in 2012, she committed suicide. That year, his sister Kerry stood trial for driving while drugged on a Westchester highway. (She was acquitted.)

Well, Kathleen did make it to Lt Governor of Maryland.

The Kennedy golden days are long over.

Personal experience: Had surgery at Georgetown in 1988. Half a dozen med students came in to read my chart, one of whom I was proudly told was a “Kennedy”. Must have been William Kennedy Smith.

Needless to say, I was not impressed. Surrounded by sycophantic future doctors, while enduring post-op pain & trauma. The Kennedy mystique is a mystery.

Lots of “acquitted”s in the writeup, I notice. It’s good to be Kennedy.

Yep, Ethel is a real scumbag. Robert’s bad genes + bad upbringing + too much money kept the show alive.

Sounds like Hollywood.

My favorite part: Ethel offered to host the rehearsal dinner at the fanciest local restaurant her assistant could find. The bill came to $8,939.80. Short by nearly $6,000, Ethel promised to pay the rest. Two years passed without payment. On April 20, 1982, the restaurant’s owner, Rudy Fisher, sent a letter to Hickory Hill. “In these trying times . . . we need the cash flow to pay our suppliers,” it read. No response. He threatened to go on TV and “tell the world what a bunch of cheapskates the Kennedys were.” By September, Fisher was paid in full. He later said a Kennedy family member told him “it should have been a privilege to serve the Kennedys, and you shouldn’t be charging for the dinner at all.” ___________________ The money quote about entitlement. Friends I knew back then never ever did business with the Kennedys twice. They rented my aunts friend's place to ski and it was trashed, totally trashed and never did they take responsibility.

I believe everything in this article. They are the most horrible, arrogant, entitled people. I had a friend who, back in the 70s, was a paralegal at the law firm that managed one of the kids’ trusts. The kids would come in to get checks every once in a while and my friend said they were completely obnoxious and demanding. They would get angry if they had to wait. They wanted to go ahead of everyone else who was there. They expected the staff to be there with a check in hand immediately.

The Kennedy mystique is a mystery.

No mystery. The lefties in the media will protect this shanty Irish clan for eternity.

Ten years ago, a local person in the know told me that Hickory Hill was a dump. There’d been no upgrading of the wiring, no remodeling, no maintenance, etc., etc., since 1968. So bad the house could not be sold.

She wasnt a kennedy, had and raised 11 kids. That’s saint material. If her adult kids never took responsibility for themselves, like the blood kennedys never did, that is their own problem. You raise 11 kids alone, however much money you have, and keep your wits and not date. Tell me whether you can have any say in their adult years.

Originally marketed at $25 mil, Hickory Hill eventually sold in 2009 for $8.2 mil. It was subsequently gutted for a total renovation.

Nonsense. Getting pregnant eleven times does make anyone a saint.

The kids would have turned out just as bad if Bobby had lived. He was phony-baloney Catholic like his mother. A womanizer. Had an affair with Jackie in 1964-5. Bobby was doing spade-work in 1964, working with pro-abortion priests, concocting rationalizations for Catholics to support abortion.
