Why? Electoral unpopularity, basically - largely caused by a feral and dishonest media. It's panicked enough Liberal MPs that they might lose the next election under Abbott, and so they've shifted to Turnbull.

Its been the trend in Australian politics in recent years for both major parties to change leadership out of fear of the polling data.
