A Benefit Or Big Brother? NYC Unveils Pilot Program To Track Driving Habits
CBS ^ | Marcia Kramer

Posted on 09/05/2015 7:35:43 PM PDT by BenLurkin

It’s a new city pilot program to track how you drive, when you drive, how fast your drive and how much gas you use.

...

It’s a tiny black box about the size of a pack of gum that is installed right under the steering wheel. It will allow city officials under a program called “Drive Smart” to collect and access data about how you drive — if you drive like a maniac, or if you’re Mr. or Mrs. Slow Poke.

“It can tell the g-force of hard stopping or hard acceleration and a hard turn,” DOT senior project manager Alex Keating said. “So the driver, as well as the service provider, are able to look at speeds, hard-breaking events, time of day and basic GPS.”

...

The Department of Transportation is looking for 400 volunteers to participate in the year-long program. You have to have a valid driver’s license and drive in the city at least four days a week.

You have to be a compliant dolt. They never track the reckless illegal aliens.

The real question is why the state needs this information and what it will do with it. The start of any program such as this is always treated with innocuous words and intentions but in time change to fit the real intent. The state always wants more power; don't give it to them. Nonsense.

If someone agree to this, isn’t that admission they don’t have enough smarts to operate a motor vehicle safely?

I’d agree to this the minute all elected officials agreed to wear ankle-bracelets 24/7 so we could keep track of them and make sure they weren’t up to anything.

Next, let’s put one on your person so we can see where you walk.

You must walk in the city at least four days per week.

Now, this device, these are 3 ‘9’s that somebody accidentally printed upside down. Don’t worry about it.

We’ll need to track your children, too. For safety, of course.

Can’t find those illegals in the shadows. Us legals are out in the bright sunshine, ready to sign up for Big Brother’s monitoring program.

[[The real question is why the state needs this information and what it will do with it.]]

That’s an easy answer- they have been trying for a long time to tax the miles we drive, not just tax gasoline-

Nope. Beyond that, the state will know where you are every second of the day. How will that information be used? My guess—more loss of liberty down our gullet, making us geese for the slaughter.

Fewer controls for known criminals,

Strict controls for those known to almost always obey the law.

Hmmmmm...

Nothing new here. Most any newer vehicles’ on-board computers are already recording your every move.
Auto insurance companies are already enticing their customers to get “big policy discounts” if customers permit insurance companies to tap into that data port.

Well Mikey as a fellow Bay Area type do you have a FasTrak to pay bridge tolls? If you do, and it’s plastered on your windshield, the folks are monitoring and tracking the movements of your vehicle and by extension you. We keep our FasTrak transponders in a bags that prevents their being pinged and we take them out just before a toll plaza. Then back into the bag they go!
