Donald Trump on Kentucky clerk: Same-sex marriage the 'law of the land'

Washington (CNN)Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Friday that he wished a Kentucky county clerk, Kim Davis, was not jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but he added that the Supreme Court has ruled and it is "the law of the land."

Individual state nullification of unconstitutional federal acts does not exclude an Article V Convention. The two can be done in parallel. An Article V Convention needs time and a lot of things done the right way. It is a longer-term solution than immediate state nullification, but a valid option and should be pursued, howbeit the best of the COC proposals being that by the Citizens for Self-Governance.

In the meantime, any state that longs to be the land of the free and the home of the brave can validly nullify and reject unconstitutional federal acts and protect its citizens, like this clerk, from such tyranny NOW.

Law of the Land?? Can someone please tell me what “LAW” the Courts have passed? They have only stuck down existing law and have no powers under the constitution to create laws. Anyone running for elective office who says otherwise has no business running for office.

Two things about Trump.

One, I believe he really wants to get America back on track, even if he’s not always right about how to do it.

Two, Trump is teachable and if he is really sincere about fixing our country, somewhere along the line, the Constitution will appear on his radar screen.

Cruz has the potential of finishing what Trump starts by, as I said, putting the Constitution back front and center when it comes to ANYTHING having to do with the feds.

Once Kentucky officials understood their constitutional grounds for doing so and accepted the inevitable federal reaction of withholding financial aid, the Governor could and SHOULD send State Troopers to the jail to free her.

And so were many other bad SCOTUS decisions that were eventually corrected by future SCOTUS. However, until a President is elected that can put forward SCOTUS candidates and federal judges that would rule otherwise, we’re stuck with them. I don’t like it one bit and I have struggled with the issue of religious conscience of the clerk vs. the “law”, even as much I do not like the law. We are a nation of laws and this current administration is not recognizing that. They willingly do not uphold federal law (immigration, guns, etc.)and I fear if we (conservatives) go the route of disobeying laws just as they do, we head toward anarchy which I fear this present administration and those of their ilk that wish to carry their mantle forward want. The clerk is exercising her Constitutional right to conscientiously object to the law, however, she also swore an oath to follow the Constitution. If she cannot reconcile that with her religious beliefs, then she has no other choice than to go the route she did and I applaud her for having the courage and fortitude to do so. But the fact remains the judicial branch ruled and the executive branch is enforcing the law. And that’s the way the system is supposed to work. Of course that does not address the moral decay we’ve fallen into over the last several decades that has brought us here. Hopefully this will be an awakening to many to see how far the pendulum has gone, and make them want to push it back through becoming engaged in the process, voting for those that will follow through on their promises and voting out the establishment/uniparty candidates; holding them accountable. It took a long time to get where we are, and it will take a long time to push it back, but it can be done. We are Americans. We have done more difficult things.

I think it’ll take more than this to bring trump down. Don’t agree with him, but he’s actually taking the mainstream “safe” route in this case. I truly wish he’d take another look at the constitutional issues here and the long-term damages to our freedoms and our society. This is not an issue that should be casually brushed aside. Actually, that's worse.

The Judges are out of control. There is no counter to them after Marbury vs Madison. However, an Article V Convention subjecting their rulings to override by the Congress, limiting their terms to 12 years and restoring Marriage would fix it.

Absent armed revolution I don't see another path...except the long road of electing POTUS and Senators who will appoint and approve new Judges.

I like Walker, but would vote for Cruz in a heartbeat. Keep in mind that as a NY developer Trump is very pro-union. That’s the invisible gorilla in government. If you break the union hold on government it’s a double win.

You cut off Dem funding. You kill union control. That leads to changes in Bacon-Davis. That reduces the cost of government projects. We hold complete GOP control over 50% of the American public. You get a governor who is pro-state’s rights and we run with that ball.

Think of federalism writ large in which socialism is proven by the stark contrast between freedom loving states v. Dem run hellholes.

Well, that’s a relief. I was worried about ISIS killing Christians. But, as long as it’s the “law of the land”, then I suppose it’s all right.

Indeed. Thus by that rationale one could say he wished Christians were not killed for refusing to convert to Islam, but that it is "the law of the land." Not much hope for Trump being a strong social conservative, or a real Christian. I think this shows one of the weaknesses of Trump, that of a morality that lacks a solid theological basis. Which is why he has shifted on abortion, and is weak against the sodomitic agenda, .

I don’t think it’s possible to casually brush this aside. He has to use this to make sure other laws that are overlooked are enforced in the same manner before circling around and landing.
