Heitkamp to Decide on Campaign for Governor Over Next Week
Roll Call Politics ^ | September 3, 2015 | Eli Yokley

North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat whose seat could likely be a top target for national Republicans in 2018, will soon announce whether she will pursue a political path that could take a re-election campaign out of the picture.

Evers since the state’s Republican governor, Jack Dalrymple, announced he would not seek re-election next year, Heitkamp has been mulling a run. Speaking on her brother’s radio show on Wednesday, Heitkamp said she would reveal her decision in the next five to seven days.

“I think she’s a 50-50 at this point,” said one Democrat familiar with her thinking, adding that while her profile might make her more competitive than other Democrats in the deeply red state, a successful campaign would not be an easy feat.

Heitkamp sought the job once before in 2000, but lost to John Hoeven, the Republican who, after he served for 10 years as governor, ran successfully for Senate in 2010.

I hope she runs, loses by a landslide, and doesn’t seek reelection in 2018.

As a member of the Senate, voting for the Iran deal could put a dent in her chances in North Dakota

I hope she runs into traffic and that she’s an organ donor and all her parts go to Republicans.

Executive Councilor Chris Sununu, younger brother of the defeated Senator, son of the famous original, has decided to run for Governor of NH.

It did until the 2010 elections ended that all-Dem delegation that had been in place since 1987, but Heitkamp is the sole Dem left.

Hassan still hasn’t made up her mind which office she’s running for, reelection as Governor or against Ayotte. It will have been 14 years since NH elected a GOP Governor (2002) and 22 years since they reelected one.

Hassan should join Heidi and run into traffic, or perhaps off a pier and into the sea.

More New England News, Lt. Governor Phil Scott (R) is running for Governor of Vermont. Rat Governor Peter Shumlin is not seeking reelection.

That may prove more difficult for Scott given VT’s preference for execrable cretins to be sent to DC, and the timing somewhat awkward for the Senate races.

Given that Leahy’s seat is up in 2016, he can’t run for that. Sanders’ is up in 2018, and it’s unlikely Scott would leave the Governorship after a single two year term (since he’d have to start running for it barely after taking office and it would leave an open Governorship). Otherwise he’d have to wait for 2022, presumably when Leahy might retire after 48 years in the Senate.

I wouldn't be surprised if his primary opponents entirely consisted of relatives of Judd Gregg, Jeb Bradley, Charlie Bass, Warren Rudman, Steve Merrill, and Walter R. Peterson, Jr.

After 3 terms as Governor, that would be good timing. He’ll be in his 60’s though.

NH loves their family style politics.

I can’t think of a stronger gubernatorial candidate though.

Heitkamp has decided NOT to run for Governor. I say that is fantastic news because it’s irrelevant as far as the 2018 Senate race is concerned (she wins, she appoints a rat to serve in her place until 2018 when the seat is up anyway, she loses and she can still run for Senate again)

but very relevant to the people of North Dakota who now have less reason to fear that a rat bitch might be lording over them from Dec 2016-Dec 2020;
