PPP's newest national poll finds that Hillary Clinton generally holds modest leads over the Republican field for President, with Ben Carson faring the strongest among the GOP hopefuls.
Carson earns a tie with Clinton at 44%, and he actually leads Bernie Sanders 42/36 in a head to head. Carson is the only declared candidate with a positive favorability rating- 41% of voters nationally see him positively to only 30% who have a negative opinion. He earns a tie with Clinton on the basis of a 43/35 advantage with independents.
The other candidates who come really close to Clinton are Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina, who are each down by just 2. Fiorina trails Clinton 45/43, and is down 39/38 to Sanders. Trump is down just 2 points as well at 46/44, and he leads Sanders 43/42. It used to be that nominating Trump looked like it would be an unmitigated disaster for the GOP but as he's gotten stronger in Republican polls, he's also gotten stronger in general election polling and is now doing better against Clinton than the perceived 'electable' candidate trio of Bush, Rubio, and Walker. Interestingly Joe Biden actually does far better than both Clinton and Sanders against Trump, with a 6 point advantage at 47/41. Biden joins Carson as the second person with a positive rating in this poll at 43/40.
The news of Trump possibly forgoing a third party bid is very good for the GOP. We find that he would actually earn more support than Jeb Bush in a three way contest, getting 27% to Bush's 23% and leaving Clinton with a landslide victory at 42%. Bush leads Trump only 46/44 with Republican voters in that scenario, and gets 31% of independents to only 19% for Bush.
The weakest performing Republicans against Clinton are Scott Walker who trails by 7 at 47/40, and Mike Huckabee who trails by 6 at 48/42. In the middle are Ted Cruz who's down 5 at 47/42, John Kasich who's down 5 at 44/39, and Marco Rubio who's down at 47/43.
2) 2 points for anyone here is MOE. As Cankles continues her collapse---and she IS the candidate---and as GOP begins to solidify around one guy, I don't think she can win.
3) Trump has "gotten stronger" in the general and in the GOP field and does better than Bush, Walker, or Rubio vs. Cankles. GOPe having heart attacks.
Jeb's Candidate Act is to appear to be a lovable suck-up....amiable to a fault. But his bgrnd indicates otherwise:
<><> Jeb sucked-up bigtime.....gave Hillary an award on the eve of Benghazi's first anniversary: "Her efforts as a citizen, an activist, and a leader have earned Secy Clinton this years Defender of Liberty Medal, said Jeb.
<><> as Fla governor he transferred state pension funds to pave his way to a $1.3 million no-show job on Wall Street.
<><> Jeb took a high-pay job w/ a Hillary supporter who is in jail for bilking the US govt of millions.
That means that we are free to judge a candidate on his or her qualities apart from electability such as conservative bona fides, present stands on the issues, character, and overall vision.
FROM THIS POLL:
Would you describe yourself as very liberal,
somewhat liberal, moderate, somewhat
conservative, or very conservative?
12% - Very liberal
19% - Somewhat liberal
29% - Moderate
23% - Somewhat conservative
16% - Very Conservative
In the last presidential election, did you vote for
Barack Obama or Mitt Romney?
48% - Barack Obama
42% - Mitt Romney
10% - Someone else / don’t remember (Can’t remember, or too embarrassed to say?)
SO.... for this poll
very conservative - people who would most likely pick Cruz for president, where some of the least sampled group. Moderates where the most heavily sampled.... is it really a surprise that the “moderates are the ones who did better in this poll?” They can make these polls say whatever they want just by manipulation of the sample group breakdown.
how do you get to cruz? that is an assumption.
right now, the establishment is pushing carson as a trump spoiler.
Quite easily, as far as I am concerned Cruz is the most conservative in the race. I am not pushing Carson.... in my opinion he has no chance of winning. I really don’t care who the establishment is pushing.
I see Trump,Like I saw Obama..... says things that tickle the ears of his supporters, but if look at his liberal history, it just doesn’t match up. And if you try to share that history with a supporter, they will say.... doesn’t matter...he tickles my ears....
Yeah, not to pat myself on the back but I said six months ago anyone not named Bush would beat Cankles.
True, but this poll is right in line with almost every other poll done with any other methodology. Trump is dead even with Hillary despite a very fragmented GOP primary field with a lot of hard feelings still out there (”I’ll never vote for x”).
I understand. So this is a statement based on your personal assessment not the numbers there.
There is another consideration. It is a group of voters who will be repulsed by a socialist. (iow any Democrat)
There are low information voters on the conservative side too. Breaking the establishment party only works if you break the establishment party.
We will. It’s in the oven right now. I think the GOP has turned in the direction as the Whigs.
Do you see any successor to Hillary posing a real threat? I see only Pocahontas or, longshot, Jim Webb.
However, this is really our last chance before the demographic tsunami sweeps all away unless we can reform and stop immigration.
It is critical, but as you have seen Trump is getting significant (not a majority) number of Hispanics supporting him. I've said I think he'll end up with at least as many as Mitt. So we may have a few years to turn this around.
Oh, BTW: if you've seen those videos of the illegals trying to come into. . . GREECE/MACEDONIA, and what is happening with the Hungarians? This stuff is going to have a signficant effect. People are going to be saying, "I don't want that here!"
