It’s an affront to the law. The name was given by an act of Congress. To allow this would allow the change of names on any federal building or federal land unilaterally.
If Congress votes to change the name so be it, it should not be by the act of one man.

Thankfully the change in name won’t affect most students - few, if any, would have been able to name the tallest peak in the United States prior to this kerfluffle.
As for Trump saying he’ll change it back - I’m okay with him reversing anything Obama did, and if this was part of the list, then so be it. Congress can actually take action on the issue if they want to, but inverting the presidential fiat string that Obama unleashed is likely more important than people in Alaska (or Ohio) getting bent out of shape over it.
Yes, it should be Congress that changes the name of Mountains and such. One of Barry’s last acts while he is in office could be to change the name of the Hoover Dam to Obama Dam and the name of Pike’s Peak to Michelle’s Peak.

If it was just a tribe who referred to it by another name, that would be one name. But it is what the people in the state, native and non-native, call the peak, and what Congress named the national park - so less about gullible natives, and much more about presidential fiats that need to be overturned.
I have no problem with changing the name from Mt. McKinley back to Denali. I feel the same about the renaming of Squaw peak in Phoenix to Piestewa Peak. My biggest problems are not only that both were changed for political advantage, but with no input from we the people or any debate.
But it looks like that is how this country is run now. I am reaching the point that I doubt electing any one or any group will save it.
