Mount McKinley authorized by act of Congress in 1917.....If Barry changes the name..........will he next designate Kwanza to replace the legal holiday of Christmas?
Both names authorized by Congress.
August 4th will become a national holiday.
Baraq Hussein Obama birthday and End of Ramadan.
The funny thing is that McKinley’s campaign slogan was “Leave well enough alone”.

Because it’s Alaska USA and not owned by the Indians and it never was. Obama should just stay out of it.

McKinley was a great president and someone that a Buchanan Brigadier such as myself can fully appreciate.
Besides, Mt McKinley is no longer in the state of Alaska. It is part of a National Park and so it is federal land.
This means that most of the funds that have been spent to protect it, maintain the roads, etc. have come from the feds.
If the Alaskans want to name it "big mountain", then they should cough up the money and buy it back from the Feds and maintain it with state funds.
But fat chance that's gonna happen.

It was originally named McKinley by a gold prospector in support of McKinley who was running for President....and eventually approved by the government.
Denali means “the great one” in Athabaskan.
Bolshaya Gora, the Russian name for it (learned something new today) means “big mountain”.
The Secretary of the Interior has the authority to change the name, and that has been done.
Alaskans first asked for this change to be made federally 40 years ago. I cannot fathom why so many freepers have a problem with this, other than they have to be against anything Obama is for.

Bingo. My understanding is that all the locals call it Denali, and not just the native Americans.
Here's your history lesson for the day: Mt. McKinley was named well before Alaska petitioned to become a state.
Had they not liked the name then, nobody would have forced them to become a state.
In fact, at the time of statehood, nobody in Alaska gave a rat's ass about the name of the mountain.

But we named it, as is our right after a president.
That does not change anything about Denali.
