there are some storms a-brewin'.

And, Although none of them have made landfall, they're making part of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii resemble a Van Gogh painting.

three hurricanesNOAA

Here's a photo showing hurricanes Kilo, Ignacio, and Jimena from left to right. This is the first time three Category 4 storms have been seen in central and eastern Pacific Ocean at one time, according to The Weather Channel. Category 4 hurricanes have wind speeds anywhere from 130-156 miles per hour.

Hurricanes are categorized primarily by wind speeds. the higher the sustained wind speed, the stronger the hurricane. A category 1 hurricane has winds up to 74-95 mph, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says they are typically expected to cause some damage to buildings as well as power outages for a few days. A category 4 hurricane is considered catastrophic, with severe damage to buildings and power outages for weeks if not months.

Hurricanes are also in the Pacific, east of longitude 160E. Typhoons are west of the Date Line. It’s complicated, you know. ;-)

Another excellent book along the lines of Dana is Joshua Slocomb's Sailing Alone Around the World

Both Dana and Slocumb's books are free reads on the web, or at least used to be.

I hate open water. *SHUDDER* I wouldn’t have made it in that life, that’s for sure.

Beau wants to go on a cruise. Maybe a Viking River Cruise, but none of that stuff where I can’t see the shore. And, as an Added Bonus, there are critters in the ocean that think I’m bait! :)

This is definitely a weird season.

I think it was seven times, hurricanes formed off the southwest coast of Mexico, pointed at the tip of Baja, and then... just sat there before dissipating. Again and again, and you would think sucking a LOT of heat out of the water.

And is this the fifth hurricane to head towards Hawaii this season? Typically they veer North, but in one case, it went due West, parallel with the equator.

The new pair seem to be back to veering North.

Re: We called it a coastal storm and then replaced windows... and And I thought us Texans were tough

Gadzooks-- Out in the Panhandle once upon a time... the wind blew so hard, we couldn't get the words out of our mouths. We had to speak into 30-30 rounds and use Saddle Ring '92 Winchesters to have a conversation--

And it was so cold in the Panhandle one winter... words froze as soon as we said them. Had to put them into a skillet on the potbelly to thaw them out to have a pow wow--

That's tell 'em... Bend--

And... how!

That's the truth... from Deep in the Heart of Texas!!!!!

I live in Arizona and nobody I know calls a dust storm anything but a dust storm. The may use several “strong” adjectives in association with it.

Wowser--Van Gogh would be amazed!

p.s. Local news Tampa Bay is eyeing a system right off our coast. "If it should wind up overnight, we could be in for torrential rain."
