GOP establishment plans Trump takedown

2. An anti-Trump ad deluge after Labor Day?

It's no secret the Republican establishment is unnerved by Donald Trump and his lead in national and key state polls.

And now, after weeks of assuming his support would be fleeting, there is a debate about how to take aim at Trump -- and just who should finance such an effort.

CNN's Maeve Reston noted that most GOP strategists see risks in having the attacks come from the other candidates or their directly affiliated super PACs. So, she reports, there is conversation about what other group might raise money for anti-Trump TV ads.

"There are a lot of donors out there who see it as much too dangerous, obviously, for the candidates, or their allied super PACs, to go after Trump," said Reston. "So they're looking to more establishment PACs to potentially take him down in post-Labor Day ads."

3. Bush is popular in the Hamptons, but has money problems elsewhere

Jeb Bush has a huge war chest and has enjoyed some summer fund-raising among the rich and famous in the Hamptons this month.

They have so much courage that they have to go at him anonymously.

Good point!

Only Trump can take down Trump, and that doesn’t look very likely!

The GOP-E is a joke. They would spend every penny to take down any conservative candidate but will play nice guy when the general election rolls around. At this point the only candidates I would vote for are those they wish to silence.

They seemingly have no concept how deeply they are despised by their own voters.

We don't call them 'elites' for nuthin. They live in a world that is thoroughly insulated from everyday America.

The people who run our country and the two major parties, have NO clue, because they're too refined to bother reading at places like Free Republic. They have no care, and no earthly understanding why Donald Trump is resonating so strongly with the public, because they DO NOT LISTEN TO US.

Ever get a form letter back from your Congress critter, after contacting them about some critical issue? If you have, then you already know why they're clueless. They dump our letters in the round file, delete their constituents' voicemails, bulk dump our emails, then return to the halls of Congress and vote like their paymasters tell them to.

And now they think Donald Trump is a threat. No, he's not the threat. He's merely the messenger of The People, sent to speak and act on our behalf, if elected. The elites seem to be harboring some misbegotten notion that, if they can just beat Trump in the election, that all will be well again, and they can go back to business-as-usual, selling America to the highest bidder and raping the national treasury.

Again -- they don't have a "friggen" clue.

Right. It has been fun watching Trump break the arms of whoever attacks him thus far. Now though instead of going in the ring and getting into a fair fight these people want to shoot arrows from outside the ring, their idea of a fair fight.

I would love him to pick Cruz

Same here. I think they'd be an unbeatable duo, though Cruz' presence on the ticket would probably be a deal breaker for some moderates and liberals who are ready to jump to Trump.

Still, I can't think of a better pair of candidates to fix what's ailing our country.

And, in this case, Jack’s name is The Donald. The more they throw; the greater his following.

If the GOP succeeds in attacking and taking down Trump the GOP will once and for all alienate 30-40% of their base rendering them winless in any important election for many many years to come

The party leaders have got to know that, which is why they'll attempt to make it look like someone else's hand is plunging the knife in.

Good points. Isn’t it usually best to pick someone from a state you need help in?

But Kasich is out. Rubio and jeb are out lol.

Fiorina and Trump would have to make up as they’ve exchanged words.

I’ve always like Newt. I still dont know what state Carson is from lol

I LOVE Giuliani because i live in NYC and saw the dinkins era.

But his gun control and gay rights views wouldn’t fly in the more conservative states. I’m not thrilled about them either.

Make him Attorney General :)

I don’t dislike Jeb as a person but I do for a president. He just doesn’t have the right stuff.

Jeb Bush is not a good person. I know you mean well but I'm getting tired of hearing people say that.

He's f***ing land thief. 65,000 acres in my county (Collier) alone - "to preserve the environment for future generations."

JUST A SMALL PART OF A MUCH LARGER STORY

Well, GOPE, I thought your enemy was Hillary Clinton and the Democrat Party.

What’s your beef with Trump?

He seems to be exciting your base while your other candidates are complete flops, so I am kind of curious where your loyalties actually are.

Do you think people would care enough about the VP to change their minds? You could well be right. And Hitlery would attack him left and right.

But I would still want to go for it!!!

Although you usually pick a VP i a state you need to win, no?

"Don't underestimate the damage half a billion dollars of negative ads can do...to the republican party. The GOPe keeps talking about Trump destroying the party but if they spend half a billion on negative ads, the only clear loser would be the GOP. Never has any political party undertaken an assault on their voters like this. People in this country would be aghast. Hitlery would be celebrating scandals and all. No party has ever executed anything so stupid. Because it never turns out the way they imagine it will. Man proposes, but God disposes.

And God willing, as stupid as the stupid party is and does, Trump could probably counter all their money spends with a single tweet.

It's not even that Jeb doesn't have the 'right' stuff -- he seems to have no 'stuff' at all.

The man is so dull, plodding, and disconnected, he'd be better suited as an elementary school principal. I can hardly believe the guy was ever a state Governor.

After reading Ann Coulter’s “Adios America” this weekend, I am now supporting Trump. Immigration is the ONLY issue, because if we don’t shut the doors real soon then there will be a permanent Dem majority and we will never win on ANY issue: not taxes, abortion, marriage, guns, national defense, trade policy, minimum wage, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING that you care about will be a lost cause. Trump is the only one, IMHO, who can bring in a lot of Dems and Independents and win.

I still like Cruz a LOT, but now I want him to be Trump’s Veep or A.G.

Oh, and screw the GOPe. They toss Trump and my vote is gone, plus all who I can persuade the to do the same.
