This Iowa poll shows just how amazing Donald Trump’s rise has been

Donald Trump leads the Republican 2016 field in a new Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics of Iowa voters. But that's not the real story.

The real story is contained deeper in the poll. In May, when the Register last polled, 27 percent of likely Iowa GOP caucus-goers viewed Trump favorably while 63 percent regarded him unfavorably. In the new poll, which was released Saturday night, Trump's favorable number is at 61 percent and his unfavorable at 35 percent.

Um, WHAT?

Let me put it another way: W-H-A-T???

Numbers just don't reverse themselves like that in the space of a few months (or ever). Especially when the politician in question is totally known by the electorate. Once you are both totally known and broadly disliked — as Trump was in May both in Iowa and everywhere else — you are doomed. One hundred times out of one hundred.

That's why I was SO certain of Trump's inability to matter at all in the 2016 race when he, somewhat stunningly, decided to enter it 70-odd days ago. In the almost 20 years — gulp — I have spent following politics closer than close, I've never seen anything like the total reversal in how Trump is perceived by Republican voters. It is, quite literally, unprecedented.

People have a chance to hear from Trump himself, an reject the image MSM was trying to build on him.

How do you like your crow served? Hot or cold? Fried, baked or broiled? With or without sauce?

It's easy to explain the reversal.

Typically the liberal mainstream press will define a threatening conservative candidate early on and that person is given no chance to recover his/her image. Sarah Palin is a perfect example of this. Make her a laughingstock and nobody will take her seriously again.

So early on, the mainstream media was able to define Donald Trump as a clown and a non-serious candidate.

What the mainstream media didn't figure on was that Trump already had millions of followers on social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Once he got into the race, he was able to easily circumvent the gatekeepers of the mainstream media and got his unfiltered message out to millions upon millions of people.

We talk often about how alternative media has the potential to destroy the monopoly of the mainstream media (i.e. ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, NYTimes, WasPost, etc.) but Donald Trump is the first conservative politician to truly harness the power of alternative and social media.

What is interesting is that this poll was partially sponsored/conducted by the Des Moines Register who, before the Iowa State Fair, called for Trump to drop out of the race ("Trump should pull the plug on his bloviating side show").

I wonder how that crow is tasting about now--better smothered in Ketchup.

Disagree.

While social media is important, it still doesn't have the reach of MSM.

What Trump has managed to do is beat the MSM on their own turf.

I think Dr. Carson is a fine man. I just don’t see him as president. I can’t imagine him negotiating with foreign leaders either - he puts me to sleep. This, is my opinion,of course. He just isn’t tough enough for the job.

Crow: the other white meat!

Mark my words, by Trump’s inauguration it will be considered a delicacy by the uber-intellectuals.

I completely agree about Carson.

He will certainly have a role to play but he just isn't alpha male enough for this time in the history of our country.

He's bright, thoughtful, and gentile, but as Trump says, we need a killer.

True, Trump beats the MSM on their own turf. But people would not know about it if not for social media. Certainly the MSM are not going to embarrass themselves by showing clips on how Trump manhandles their reporters at press conferences and such. It is all the Tweets, Instagrams and Facebook posts that link people to the appropriate YouTube clips.

For instance, Trump linked this 15-second video clip on Barbara Bush that was instantly viewed by millions and was devastating to Jebby Bush's campaign.
