Many many moons ago, I wrote a draft of an alternate history in which Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson and Richie Valens survived their plane crash in 1959, Buddy Holly put his musical career on hold in 1964 to run for a Congressional seat from Texas (of course), goes to Vietnam on a fact finding mission and comes back to recommend nothing short of total military victory, LBJ takes his advice, and the U.S. is out of Vietnam by late 1967 with the North defeated and Saigon in full control of the country.
LBJ picks Holly for his VP running mate after Hubert Humphrey chooses to go back to Minnesota to run for Governor, the ‘RAT ticket wins in ‘68, Nixon REALLY quits politics, but after LBJ suffers a fatal heart attack in 1970, Buddy Holly becomes the 37th President, has a good two years in office, however is defeated by Republican Governor Ronald Reagan in 1972.
