Does Trump aspire to be a 21st century Hoover with a modernized platform of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley tariff that helped send the U.S. and world economy into a decade-long depression and a collapse of the banking system?

It is government regulations that are causing the imbalance and the flight of manufacturing overseas.
So a change in regulations or the elimination of most of them would make manufacturing more profitable here.
China did not steal our manufacturing. The US government forced manufacturing to leave.
Chinese wages were a fraction of wages in the US before I was born And that was a long long time ago.
Container freight has worked to their advantage. In my younger days, every item shipped by sea had to be in a heavy wood crate, which really was a box. Much more costly than container freight.
Ships were unloaded a box at a time.
So more economical shipping helped the Chinese, but that alone is not enough to give them a major advantage.
What has forced manufacturers to leave the US:
The EPA, high taxes, labor unions and a host of other impediments.

True ..but not just that alone...without an outstretched hand from China and other nations they wouldn’t be going....
ALL States being right to work states would be a GREAT start, then abolishing the EPA would send businesses flooding home I would imagine!!!!

Actually, Trump doesn’t manufacture any Clothes overseas.
He simply Contracted to License his Name to Companies that did, like Macys. They paid him for his Name, not the Items.
The only things he has Manufactured are his Campaign Items, Hats, Shirts, Bumper Stickers etc. which are made in the USA.
Well, that’s what I meant. They did what the chose, and wrecked the economy. There were any number of factors, but that was certainly one of them.

I’m not sure we should even talk about the EPA or unions. I am personally quite content with what Trump is offering with regards to immigration. I feel no need to demand a sweeter deal, especially if it threatens the immigration deal. As long as he doesn’t start walking all over core conservative values, I will give him a lot of flexibility to make deals with other constituencies. I want this immigration deal.
Ridiculous, there are enough steel mills in the USA that could come on line to meet the demand. It may not happen overnight but it would happen. But you forgot about that. If the price jumped 40% don’t you think it would affect DOMESTIC (hoe evil) supply? Look at oil as the example.

Ronald Reagan protected America from being economically raped by Japan. The primary reason many Toyotas are assembled in the USA now is because of Reagan. Reagan's temporary protections saved the Harley-Davidson company. Reagan was the most conservative president in 50 years.

Forbes and Laffer are flat income tax proponents, and while I agree that a flat income tax would be an improvement over our Marxist inspired progressive income tax, it is NOT the answer because it does not abolish the IRS.
The proper way to modernize the US tax code is to replace the income tax with the FairTax and abolish the IRS.
Hopefully, an articulate proponent of the FairTax will catch Trump’s attention and he’ll start pushing it.

Reagan put tariffs on Japan and they moved production to the US South. That’s why there are Toyota plants in Alabama, etc. This isn’t hard.
PS The FairTax is about FReedom. We’ll NEVER be a FRee people so long as we have and income tax and an IRS!
