Election 2016: Donald Trump Poll Numbers Surprise, 'Favorable' Views Up, Support Growing

WASHINGTON -- For months there has appeared to be one roadblock standing between Donald Trump and victory in the Republican presidential primary campaign: The large number of people who didn’t like him. While poll after poll found him in the lead, they also found him with some of the highest unfavorable numbers -- meaning people had already formed an opinion of him, and it wasn’t positive.

But two polls released Tuesday in early primary states show that dislike evaporating. A South Carolina poll conducted by Monmouth University found Trump with 58 percent holding a favorable opinion and 28 percent, an unfavorable opinion. A Public Policy Polling survey of New Hampshire voters found 56 percent holding a favorable opinion and 32 percent, an unfavorable opinion.

“It’s a phenomenon we have never really seen before -- an already extremely well-known figure who can completely flip his favorability ratings in the span of weeks [without the intervention of a national emergency or similar event],” said Patrick Murray, the pollster who conducted the South Carolina poll and has also recently conducted surveys nationally and in Iowa. “But of course, that rule has applied to our experience with typical politicians. Trump is completely outside the box.”

I keep saying this. If President Trump is going to clean up the DC cesspool, he needs all the help he can get in the US Senate. Cruz and the small handful of other Constitutional Conservatives being mentored by Senator Sessions are needed there to turn clean up the US Senate.

And let's be honest here. Cruz got played very badly on that trade deal. He needs more time so he can hone his power of persuasion and depth of experience. For VP? I totally trust Trump and his advisors to make a smart and principled choice that's best for the US.

> “And let’s be honest here.

No, let’s be honestly ‘informed’ here.

> “Cruz got played very badly on that trade deal.”

It was not a trade deal, it was a trade authorization so right off the bat you got it wrong. Trade Promotion Authority TPA had failed to be renewed by Harry Reid and needed to be renewed. It was not secret and there was nothing wrong with it. It has been in place since FDR and for good reason because no foreign power will deal with 535 changlings in Congress. The TPA is a simple authorization for the President’s trade reps to be the single focal point for deals SUBJECT TO final approval by Congress. Not a damn thing wrong with that. I read the TPA and there was nothing wrong with it.

Both Ted Cruz and Donald Trump want Free Trade and they want TPA. The difference between a Trump-Cruz team and Hillary, Biden, Sanders, Warren is that Trump-Cruz will promote great deals for American exports such as Natural Gas in the form of LNG whereas the other side will block all of that and attempt to force exporters out of business.

The overwhelming reason Ted Cruz voted for TPA is because democrats will block it after 2016 when Trump-Cruz are in the White House. But now they would vote for it. Ted’s analysis is that Obama would not have enough time to finalize any trade proposals under TPA that could get past a republican Congress and so far he’s correct and he’s helped by Donald Trump who will support Senator Jeff Sessions in blasting any trade bill that Senator Jeff will say is bad for America.

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz see eye to eye on trade.

> “He needs more time so he can hone his power of persuasion and depth of experience.”

Says who? Says you? You’re a nobody. Ted whips crowds into a frenzy everywhere he goes. He is the most popular speaker after Trump in terms of winning over people. That’s a fact.

The bottomline is Ted is light years ahead of you in knowing what to do.

Ted Cruz is a political superstar that comes once in a generation perhaps lifetime. The reason he’s not polling higher than Trump is because Trump reaches the low information voter better. Ted is conservative through and through and he does fantastic out in flyover country with the grassroots while Donald has sewn up the major urban media markets. Together they will blow away the democrats and GOP establishment.

“Trump has managed to corral all the attention. Obviously, he knows how to manipulate the MSM. They may have met their master.”

I think you’re right.

I also think that’s one of the biggest reasons the MSM is so pizzzy right now. NYTimes and Fox are having seizures on a daily basis.

You know what is really weird? I feel like only Trump and Cruz are in this election cycle. It’s as if the others don’t exist.

Because every one of the remaining 15 -- Carson excepted -- are GOPe agents. Most of the field was seeded with cannon fodder to draw votes "away" that will later go right to Jeb. Carly Fio-RINO is their biggest Jeb wingman now. you watch her be tasked with going after Trump in the Sept debate.
When it fails, and Trump moves up to 35-38%, then the donors will unleash "the dirt on Donald." When that too fails, we will reach a level of great concern to me. People who have trillions to lose (the entre U.S. Treasury, in fact) are capable of desperate acts.

Trump understands the viscous mindset of his political enemies. Most of Republicans just don’t, and never will.

I don't like being talked down to. It's been my inner-geek fascination since high school, following politics. I get it, and have since Ted Cruz's magnificent 21 hours, that Cruz is a real excellent voice for Constitutional Conservatives.

What I also get is that the US Senate is probably on the short list of most disgusting corrupt elected governing bodies in history. If that isn't cleaned up, nothing good happens. Cochran stealing that election is about as outrageous as it can get, and demonstrates that voters aren't choosing anymore. I'm stating that Cruz and those other strong voices (about six of them?) in the US Senate might be able to bring some others along, maybe get some election results that are helpful, and clean that cesspool up. What's the hurry? If Cruz become a force in that endeavor, in four years he'll be US President.

Ah,,THERE’s the condescension that always shows up on a Trump thread.

“Trump reaches the low information voter better.”

Cruz is an elitist apparently only palatable to the upper-crusty Republicans because clearly you can’t believe the LIV Republicans would appreciate Cruz’s message...right?

I’m not going to respond to you because it’s a waste of time. If you need attention from someone, call Lindsey Graham. He’ll be happy to talk smack with you about Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

My thoughts too; I pray for both their protection, Trump and Cruz. I think they already have an understanding and part of the reason they keep it under wraps is Trump intends to draw the flak and keep Cruz in the clear as long as possible JMO

Here is what it boils down to for real people:

The rest of the candidates do not have the balls, the stones, the huevos, the fortitude, the spine, the single minded drive, the FU money nor the power to take on the GOPe, the CoC, the MSM and the Corruptocrats and leave them crying and asking what in the hell just happened. Why does my butt hurt so much?

Trump does, and he has shown us he has no problem putting a lot of butt hurt into the aforementioned groups.

Do I trust Trump 100%? No!! Is he the only one who isn’t funded by the CoC or other self interested big donors? Yes!! Walker is a good man. I see that. I saw him hold out against immense pressure in Wisconsin. Cruz is a better man. Smart as hell in addition to him stand up to leadership, and call them liars. They have taken on sacred cows. I give them that.

Trump has been skewering the sacred cows on his lance as he rushes enemy positions. The mans frigging lance looks like a shish kebab. Walker and Cruz showed fortitude before they started running. Since, not so much. Trump is slaying the opposition, and driving their women and children before him before salting their fields.

He is a flawed man, but as I say, the Lord works in mysterious ways. A lot of us have been praying for a Dirty Harry style ass kicker to represent us.

That is why he will win.

I think Trump discussed a SCOTUS appointment with Cruz. Wouldn’t that be a hoot. Supreme Court Justice Ted Cruz.

Has a hell of a ring to it, don’t ya think?

He would be great, but I’d like to see the two of them as a duo. Trump has his “blunt force” ideas of how he’d like to do things, he needs a constitutional brain like Cruz.by his side.

Cruz would bring three things to a ticket with Trump:

1 - the base loves him and would turn out in force to vote for him.

2 - The questions we have about how Trump isn’t conservative on certain issues are partially ameliorated by Cruz being on the ticket (and in Donald’s ear using that persuasive style he has). It’s safe to assume that if Donald wanders too far astray, Cruz will make every effort to bring him back.

3 - There is no on-the-job training to be President but being Vice President is as close as it gets. Cruz is still a young man and would certainly be a front runner for 2020 or 2024 (depending on Trump’s ability to / wanting to run again).

A freight train the GOPe can’t stop, LOL. Now he just needs to start naming names and carrying the message to Congressional elections. Name the ones he can’t support. Find ones he could and get them to run opposing the GOPe RINOs.

“Trump understands the viscous mindset of his political enemies. Most of Republicans just don’t, and never will.”

Moreover, he TELLS US ABOUT IT. In the debate when one of the mods asked about investors losing money when Trump declared Bankruptcy, Trump realized that it sounded like his bankruptcy cost mom and dad their life savings. His response was (paraphrasing) “All the people who invested, who lost that money, they’re sharks. They’re killers. They’d slit your throat for a dollar. They knew exactly what they were getting into”.

When was the last time you heard a politician pull back the curtain and speak this way? I never have.
