Why salad is so overrated (It causes environmental disaster alert)
Washington Post ^ | August 23, 2015 | Tamar Haspel

As the world population grows, we have a pressing need to eat better and farm better, and those of us trying to figure out how to do those things have pointed at lots of different foods as problematic. Almonds, for their water use. Corn, for the monoculture. Beef, for its greenhouse gases. In each of those cases, there’s some truth in the finger-pointing, but none of them is a clear-cut villain.

There’s one food, though, that has almost nothing going for it. It occupies precious crop acreage, requires fossil fuels to be shipped, refrigerated, around the world, and adds nothing but crunch to the plate.

It’s salad, and here are three main reasons why we need to rethink it.

When you have nothing of substance to talk about, the only thing left to do is, make up crap.

Salad! It’s what food eats.

Lost in the beating up of lettuce is its value as roughage moving cheese balls and pizza through your digestive tract.

While in the check out line of my local health food store, I actually over heard an old hippy gal excitedly telling the cashier about the “breatharians.”

After she check out, me and the guy behind me in line had a good laugh at her expense.

No beef or salad for the proletariat. These are now luxuries for the elites.

Insects? Algae? Bark?

You got it! Marxists don’t feed people very well. Food central planning, even in the land of plenty, looks like Michelle’s school lunch program. Global central control over food is a goal of the global warmists/Marxists.

Salad exists as a matrix to hold olive oil.

Cooked vegetables exist as a matrix to hold melted butter.

Hear hear!

I hate libtards. I use to feel sorry for them, but now that they get free mental health care as part of Obamacare, there are no longer any excuses for them.

Slowly but surely, everything in the outside aisles of a supermarket are being labeled as bad for us. Then they tell us processed food makes us fat and gives us things like diabetes.

They have no freaking clue and anyone in the media with half a brain, (they will have to double up) whose next question isn’t, “if salad is no good for you, and everything else is no good for you, what do you plan on eating?” is just as moronic as the person making the statement.

Then again, that’s the problem. It isn’t the moron making the statement. It’s the media who actually gives these losers a platform that is the problem.

Quite aside from her calorie-laden examples of “salads” at chain restaurants that are a few lettuce leaves laden with high-calorie toppings and dressings, responsible eaters at home like to eat a generous helping of greens and watery raw veggies like tomatoes and cukes in order to feel full, dressed with just a smidge of oil and vinegar. This still requires a couple of trips to the grocery per week, plus all the fuel required for groceries to receive the produce from megafarms in distant locations.

A large part of her crank complaint is valid, that it is a sinful waste of fossil fuels to truck low-nutrient salad greens far and wide. The solution is not to denounce salad greens, however. The solution is more community-based gardening.

Modern suburbia is dotted with “planned” developments that are only dense rows of townhouses, duplexes and apartment buildings for a mile or two in every direction. No general store and no farm plots in walking distance; and home gardening is effectively forbidden by the HOAs. Many of these housing developments have been hacked out of formerly unworkable topography by bulldozers, yet remain too hilly for anyone but fitness freaks to carry groceries on a bike. So everything that gets done requires gasoline.

There are often large, sunny slopes that could be converted to rentable garden plots, but don’t hold your breath on that. Instead, the community dues have to pay for lawn maintenance of “open spaces.” The community boards are often all-powerful, but lazy and unpaid. So nothing ever gets done except against their personal enemies or ideological targets who fly unauthorized POW-MIA flags or paint their door the wrong color. Forget about gardening or healthful outdoor laundry drying in summer. The “planned” community didn’t “plan” on the Great Obama Recession and the war with the middle east when they did the planning in the 90s.

Years ago I read “Survival Into the 21st Century” by Victor Skulvinskas (I think that is the correct name).

Viktoras H. Kulvinskas, breatharian nutbag.
