The Ashley Madison hack ruined my life
CNN Money ^ | 8/23/2015 | Jose Pagliery

The Ashley Madison hack is indeed ripping apart marriages.

It's exposing affairs, confirming suspicions, and keeping cheaters up at night in cold sweats.

Several people who were directly affected by the data breach of the cheating website AshleyMadison.com have reached out to CNNMoney. Their identities and details have been independently verified, but they have spoken on condition of anonymity.

The mistress

"Ana" is a highly educated business woman in her 40s who is finalizing a divorce with her husband.

She stayed up late Thursday rapidly texting eight married men with whom she had relationships after finding them on Ashley Madison.

She said the men are all worried their wives will use search tools now available online to find the email addresses they used to sign up for the cheating site.

Meanwhile, Ana is concerned about her job in finance. Her clients are couples and small businesses.

Welcome to the Information Age, Everyone!

True! Everytime something like this happens, I use it as an example to my two sons as to exactly why they should never post anything remotely personal on the Internet. Absolutely nothing is safe on the 'net, period.

Yeah, it sounds like a reporter (or reporters) made up some stories and touted them as real to make a deadline. If a person is in this kind of marital trouble, I find it real hard to believe that their first thought is to reach out to a news website. They’re a lot more likely to reach out to a therapist, then a lawyer.

I’m not at all certain that people skulking around anonymous websites looking for extramarital sex would use an identifiable email address. Probably a lot of fakes among those email addresses that appear to belong to public figures. A little caution might be in order.

Yeah, it’s like blaming the hotel bar because you bought some chick drinks, took her upstairs, and your wife found out.

Why would they reach out to CNN? This reads like a contrived article from a hurting reporter and website.

Because the reporter works in a deep blue U.S. city. Everyone he knows was on the site and just using the ones willing to go on the record gave him more than enough to fill an article.

I wish it were possible to buy stock in divorce attorneys. Those guys have to be licking their chops. If I were a divorce attorney, I would stand up a database with a search function using the data, with my name plastered all over the site.

I'm sure some will even go a step farther...

Search the data for people in certain zip codes within 50 miles of their practice and send out solicitation letters...

You mean journalists make up stories and then publish them like they are real?!

I grieve for the role of the editor, the fact checker. One day, maybe, they will return.

The thing to remember is that if you cheat, you are ALWAYS a cheater. There is no way to un-ring that bell. You can rationalize, medicate it, put alcohol on top of it, whatever. But it’s always there. I don’t care if she looks like Miss America and has a billion dollars in the bank, I refuse to join the ranks of people that do this.

"Ana" is a highly educated business woman...

Are we supposed to be impressed? Does that make her a moral exemplar? What?

It means she's not a low-class redneck from the south. Very important to liberals to make the distinction between the "good" urban liberal types and white trash conservatives.

Yup. The time to have situational-awareness is BEFORE you do something like so you can smarten up and head it off.

A point to be made that I haven’t seen discussed is how many unhappy couples there are. Ashley Madison is a symptom, not a disease.

Adultery has been removed as a cause for divorce by most states.

Where? I thought everything was a cause for divorce in our liberal looney land.

“No fault divorce” holds in a vast majority of states. The “No Fault” concept has governed divorce since the early 1970’s. No fault renders any attempt to introduce evidence of “fault” irrelevant.

Go for it.

I'd settle for a tattoo on the right arm up to the elbow.

This kind of crap behavior has in some part helped gay marriage become a reality. It’s pretty hard to talk seriously about the sanctity of marriage while hitting the bars boffing chicks. The gay marriage advocates use the marriage chapels of Vegas as an example. They say, “There’s so many people that get married in Vegas while out on a bender that the city has quickie marriage chapels lining the streets.” They say, “Britney Spears and a lot of other people go out on a drunk weekend and get married as a joke, but I can’t do it with a partner that I’ve been with faithfully for 20 years?” Whether we buy the argument or not, the general public and the media does.

I’m not saying it’s good or right, but that’s the reality. People’s lack of seriousness and downright shoddy treatment of the institution of marriage has gravely damaged it and allowed all kinds of bad things to be done to it.

I think that “Ana” is concerned with what her clients would think of her, if they knew what she does with all these men.

Maybe belatedly some of these people will think about their reputations in the world? Just a thought. In spite of the sexual revolution and society having become much more liberal about sexual matters, this woman is afraid of what people will think of her.

I agree there's nothing to celebrate. I only hope the perps will driven to tears of penitential grief. Seriously.

And that they will be restored in their true vows with their true spouses. I don't just believe in justice. I also believe in grace.
