Newly-minted parents at Venezuelas Dr. Luis Razetti Hospital in Anzoátegui are denouncing its maternity ward for killing 17 babies in a week, the victims of sanitation so poor the ward is overtly inhabited by a swarm of opossums.
One relative of a dead newborn told El Tiempo that, upon challenging hospital officials regarding the opossums, she was told the appearance of possums is something normal in the hospital..."
... the reason opossums are so common, says one employee at the hospital, is that sanitation employees have run out of cleaning liquids and necessary maintenance items, leaving them impotent in the face of the filth consuming the hospital.
... nearly every kind of necessary medical supply was running out, from needles to bandages to drugs. By the next year, doctors were reporting a surge in the number of amputations at hospitals, as those injured began developing infections that doctors did not have sufficient antibiotics to suppress...
70 percent of Venezuelan pharmacies were struggling to keep stocked with basic drugs... The Venezuelan government, which controls all medical care in the country, at the time owed $4 billion to drug companies and had no way of paying the debt back, leaving pharmacies understocked.

This is what Hugo Chavwez referred to as "21st century socialism."
Common garden tools work against possums!!
I wonder if it smelled like brimstone in the nursery?
Those things are ugly, like a big rat.
But do you eat them?
I know two guys in GA that do after a few weeks on the cleansing diet.
Not me.
No. You don’t eat them. Nasty animals. I think they’re probably even listed under unclean animals in the Bible. I’m not eating them. - Not gonna mistreat them; but also not petting them either. They will tear a housecat up.
Planned Parenthood Possums.
They should send in our akita. She nabbed a pretty good sized one just last night. They’re coming in to feed off the wild cherries and slugs.
Actually, I don’t have much against possums. They are ugly and stupid, but they don’t chew up the house, dig holes in the yard, or invade the attic. They ignore everything unless they get cornered. They generally are disease-free, and they eat pests, too. And they don’t spray our dogs when they get barked at.
They get extra points for being marsupials and those prehensile tails, too.
My old copy of Joy of Cooking includes a section on how to prepare Opossum. The newer editions, unfortunately, have no such reference.
Nice kitty!
Well these two guys in GA that referred to in my previous post do.
I wouldn’t either. Heard it’s real stringy though...
If you were in or around DuPage County last summer, you would have heard the SCREAM!
My wife was talking with friends near the door, the dog wanted in. Unnoticed was the dog's new toy!
The SCREAM came when she entered the house, to find both dogs and the new toy, a live opossum in a hot pursuit.
Being Australian Shepherds, they did not want to eat it, just play.
By the time I got a shovel from the shed, they had it cornered and the possum was playing possum.
Took weeks for things to return to normal.
