CNN/ORC Poll: Donald Trump now competitive in general election

Washington (CNN)—Since announcing his campaign in late June, Donald Trump has quickly leapt to the top of the Republican field, leading recent polls nationally, in Iowa and in New Hampshire. And now, for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, his gains among the Republican Party have boosted him enough to be competitive in the general election.

The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points, a dramatic tightening since July. Trump is the one of three Republican candidates who have been matched against Clinton multiple times in CNN/ORC polling to significantly whittle the gap between himself and the Democratic frontrunner. He trailed Clinton by 16 points in a July poll, and narrowed that gap by boosting his standing among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (from 67% support in July to 79% now), men (from 46% in July to 53% now) and white voters (from 50% to 55%).

But Clinton still holds the cards overall in the race for the White House, leading four Republican contenders: She tops Trump and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker by 6 points each among registered voters, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by 9 points, and businesswoman Carly Fiorina by 10 points.

“Jeb will re-emerge as a border hawk, count on it.”

Too late. What they might do is dump Jeb and run Romney again. There is still time to do it, but even Romney can’t stop the Trumpster.

I would vote for Trump. I am so tired of political correctness and the selling out of Americans by a corrupt political class who have taken over both political parties and use unconstitutional legislation to make themselves rich at the expense of the citizens.

Obamacare is nothing but government capturing a market and fleecing citizens to enrich themselves and the insurance industry. Obamacare has not delivered on a single promise made by the Democrats and ruined the medical care for millions. D.C. parasites have disenfranchise myself and all American citizens and robbed us blind!

Being conservative or liberal isn’t about what a politician calls themselves. It’s about how their votes, endorsed policies, authored laws etc..support either of the ideologies. Once we see what they DO we can ascribe the label.

We should NEVER believe someone says they’re conservative without proof. We’ve been burned enough times to have learned that lesson.

“The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points”

Among deaf, dumb, and blind democrats.

When did I bring up Fox News?

And how does pointing to Fox News’ unreliability mean that CNN is now reliable?

I trust neither CNN or Fox that much.

Why should you trust either of them?

Isn’t all that straw getting itchy by now?

“We should NEVER believe someone says they’re conservative without proof. We’ve been burned enough times to have learned that lesson.”

You make a strong argument, but what if none of the other candidates is suitable? What if you have reasons not to vote for any other candidate, and the only reason you have not to vote for the unproven conservative is that he is unproven?

At least he is saying the right things, and none of the other candidates even dares to let these things pass their lips.

The unknown quantity *might* turn out well, while I know that the others definitely will not.

“¡Yeb! is unelectable?”

I think so. If he is the nominee, even more people will stay home than did so in response to McLame and Mittens.

Only in Trump Mania World would a CNN poll (bashed in the past by conservatives) suddenly now be trusted.

What was bad and libbbbbberal (CNN) is now good and trustworthy!

But I thought that Limbaugh didn’t trust CNN?

I guess that was a Limbaugh in a previous incarnation...

That’s funny coming from someone who posts an MSNBC article on birthright citizenship and plays it off as fact.

“this poll on the internals looked fairly legit”

Sampling is always problematic. There are some people whom pollsters are reluctant to approach. Some people select themselves as respondents. Many who always turn out to vote will not participate in polls.

I don’t trust any poll, ever, right up until the last vote is counted (and frequently, if it is a vote for a demonrat, counted twice).

My sense is that they do not know. If someone tries to tell them, they write him off as an ignorant, racist, fascist, knuckle-dragging, NASCAR-obsessed, cousin-marrying, road-kill-eating, tobacco-juice-dribbling, gun-fondling, religious fanatic redneck.

Worse, I don’t think they *care* about the welfare of the country. Whether good or evil wins the election, they are in with the in crowd. They are allowed to kneel down on the shores of the money river and dip their buckets, and that, I sincerely believe, is *all* they care about.

Legitimate polls are done randomly by phone so the first two wouldn't apply. The third point is legitimate since I will not participate in a poll. I agree that polling doesn't always end up correct, but they are usually within margins of error which can be quite wide.

Maybe he understands how Ronaldus Magnus did it, and can duplicate that strategy.

“they are usually within margins of error which can be quite wide.”

Often so wide as to be useless. In addition, I’m sure you are aware that many “polls” are actually push-polls.

I’m not afflicted with “Trump Mania,” but I am trying to keep an open mind. On the one hand, his conversion is recent; on the other, it *could* be genuine.

That said, I agree with you on the reliability (or complete lack thereof) of anything CNN says.

I don't pay much attention to push polls and neither, I suspect, do major donors.

IMO, a lot of push polls successfully masquerade as legitimate.
