Sen. Marco Rubio cast aside Donald Trump’s recent immigration plan during an appearance at the Iowa State Fair Tuesday and challenged whether it would pass Congress.
“I haven’t read his plan; from what I’ve seen from press reports, there are a couple of ideas he shares with a lot of people,” the Florida senator told reporters after a speech at the fair about the plan Trump released Sunday.
“But [the rest] doesn't sound like something that has any chance to pass Congress.”
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, has been more moderate than most of his GOP presidential rivals and was a sponsor of the 2013 immigration reform bill that included a pathway to citizenship. Trump’s immigration policy paper slammed that compromise bill — which he called the “Schumer-Rubio immigration bill — as a “giveaway to the corporate patrons who run both parties.”
The real estate magnate, who is soaring in the GOP polls, also proposed to end birthright citizenship for children born of parents in America illegally.
Rubio’s comments followed a rain-soaked speech at the fair Tuesday where the senator spoke for just eight minutes and didn’t take questions from the crowd because of the weather.
“I’m going to cut it a little shorter than normal because they say another band is coming through and I don’t want anyone to get wet,” he said.
“But probably too late for that.”
While he spoke for less than half of his 20-minute allotment and left to meet voters instead of taking questions in the pouring rain, a substantial throng of attendees with ponchos and umbrellas assembled to listen to his speech.
His modified stump speech cast a forward-looking view at the country, promising that the next century could be better than the past one. He touted ideas to modernize America’s economy and higher education, as well as shore up national defense.
“What we are called upon to do not is ensure that the American dream doesn’t just survive, but it reaches more people and changes more lives than ever before,” he said.
“We are called not to just keep America special and great, but keep it greater than it’s ever been.”
Rubio’s appearance at the Des Moines Register’s presidential soapbox marked his first appearance in the Hawkeye State since the state’s voters declared him the winner of the Aug. 6 Fox News GOP debate, according to a recent Suffolk University poll.
While that poll found him in third place with 10 percent of Iowans, a CNN poll of Iowans just a few days later found him tied for seventh with 5 percent.
The Associated Press notes that he hadn’t been in Iowa for a full month before his most recent return, leading some Republicans to question why he hasn’t visited more often.
After he left the stage to meet with fairgoers, Rubio bumped into Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R). While the governor remained shy on any official endorsement, he said that he could see himself supporting Rubio.
“He’s a good friend, he came to my birthday party. I’m trying to be a good host for everyone who comes,” he said.
“I’m really impressed, I think he’s a rising star in the Republican ranks and we are really appreciative of him coming.”
If his momentum is maintained, Trump could call a million man march on DC and ten million would show up.
Right now he needs to bring a message to black neighborhoods, make a trip to Israel, and send a friendship token planeload of supplies to the Kurds. Bam, Bam, Bam.
LOL, the weather? Why didn't he just say he had a headache?
Trump’s willing to make the effort... YES, we can keep protect our borders... yes, we can be a country. Rubio needs to get on board and make an effort rather than telling us how things ‘can’t be done’...

There are even a few liberals who understand there has to be more wagon pullers than wagon riders for those who need to ride to continue to do so.

Rubio is the Problem that makes Trump so popular
Getting illegals to self deport, that is easy. Tell them if they leave voluntarily before the wall goes up, they are free to leave without being arrested , getting a criminal record.
Just watch them self deport, the highway traffic jams going towards San Diego border.
I heard lots of MSM saying Trump’s plan costs too much.
That may be true, but its a one time charge.
First in 2006 the Congress OK’d 1.5 billion to build the border fence. Never spent it.
Every year the Fed pay illegals welfare, food stamps etc. Mexico teaches them how to beat our laws to get bennies.
Here in Vegas we educate every year over 100,000 illegals at a cost of $15,000 a pupil, plus building extra schools. Our states performance in education is poor.
Illegals have per class census at 34 students per class.
Illegals in jail, awaiting trial, we pay to feed, guard and cloth them.
They take American jobs while 95 million Americans are out of work force, unemployed , record numbers on food stamps and welfare.
We are bankrupt. Most illegals are not paying taxes.
Our hospitals are going bankrupt because they are mandated to treat the poor, and illegals are costing us billions since ER is their doctor.
So your choice is a one time charge to build a wall with money already allocated , and then chase the illegals out.
And now the whole world knows why Rubio is an Idiot and sinking fast, Trump is going to ENFORCE EXISTING LAWS, CONGRESS HAS NO SAY unless Rubio is leading the charge to Repeal those Laws.

Trump could use leverage to get his plan thru, something gope seem to have forgotten when dealing with Obama
Hey Rube, when President Trump faithfully executes the immigration laws of these United States, whatcha going to do?

And there’s the “down ticket” candidates that a Cruz or Trump could help carry their elections- and change congress.
Frankly a president will be limited in what good he can do us as long as the present establishment perverts the congress.

Rubio, Christie, Fiorina, and Jeb have outed themselves as RINOs in how they have responded to Trump’s plan. Trump’s plan is the litmus test by which we should judge all these candidates. Not what they said last year or last month. What do they say to Trump’s plan.
Kasich? Cruz? Huckabee? Beuller? Beuller?

So Rubio is getting his info from news reports? Well that makes him POTUS material, no doubt.
I guess Marco has forgotten that most of Trump’s proposed immigration policy is already the law of the land. As the Chief Executive, all he would have to do is order it enforced.
