After more than a year of treating their most passionate voters like they dont matter at all, the Republican Party is no longer even trying to hide its disdain for conservatives.
The surprise success of Donald Trump has thrown the GOP into disarray, ruining their carefully conceived plans of sending Jeb Bush to the general election. And instead of taking a step back, assessing the situation, and letting the voters tell them what they want, the party is desperate to regain control of the election.
You do not benefit by trying to draft behind Donald Trump and hope that he collapses and his low-information supporters run into your arms, Rick Wilson, a top Republican strategist, said on CNN this week. This is a guy who is increasingly leading a fraction of the conservative base into a very dangerous cul-de-sac. He is promising things that he can never deliver. And it is time for Jeb Bush and other folks to start posting up and really comparing and contrasting Donald Trumps rhetoric with the reality.
This is how GOP insiders are beginning to talk about the base. Its not enough now that they are attacking Donald Trump; they are now turning that venom onto his supporters. They talk about how Trumps numbers have peaked, how he cant win the nomination with only 20 percent of the vote. What they fail to understand is that no other candidate can succeed without that 20 percent.
If the GOP is dead set against throwing their support behind Trump, theyd better figure out a way to lure his voters back to one of their favored candidates. Insulting them calling them low-information supporters is not the way to go about it. Especially when theres no indication that the label fits.
There is a tremendous opportunity here for Republicans, and they are letting it sail right past them. Trump has energized a portion of the base that hasnt been this excited in a long time. Why would you fight that? Why, unless his message is so wildly off-brand that he doesnt fit into the party? But if thats true, then Republicans no longer serve the needs of conservative Americans.
You can throw a thousand criticisms at Trump and still have room for more. Hes far from the perfect candidate. But his message resonates for a reason. Conservatives arent desperate for a reality TV candidate; theyre desperate for someone who is as fed up with the BS as they are. And, as his campaign has exposed, that BS is coming from the Republican Party as much as it is Obama and Clinton. -
McCain and Biden. Two old geezers as establishment wonks running and just smiling at each other. How’s that for thrilling?......NOT!
I am not confused but I am worried that the “Obama-ized” (lobotomized) public sees all this shenanigans and will vote Democratic in the end once again...
What is comical is that most of those truly in favor of Trump are those that are politically active and get most of their news from sources other than the mainstream media. I don’t think they mean “ low information voters” but, rather, low indoctrination voters.
I saw an old Cat D7 once that somebody had overfilled the air cleaner (oil bath) on that went "runaway". The operator didn't know exactly what was happening and though the fuel injection was malfunctioning. He grabbed an axe and started chopping at the injector lines thinking he'd cut off the fuel. This was an old external pushrod motor and he did manage to stop it because the axe bouncing off the injectors had bent/dislocated enough of the pushrods that it couldn't run any more.
hillary with a sombrero.
Nothing will advance our long-term goals like Jeb Bush finishing a distant third.
The GOPe and Chamber of Commerce would either have to come groveling for our forgiveness, or go away like the Whigs.
I agree. Things are VERY bad for the Democrats. Whether you like them or not, at least the GOP has strong young candidates that will be there for the next quarter century. On the other hand, the Dems only have old ‘60’s rejects who are close to their deathbeds (Hildabeast, Bernie the Red, John “I served in Vietnam” Kerry, Algore, ALL are near 70). The Dems bench is in the back dumpsters behind abortion clinics.
Unfortunately the Dems do have young blood that is just as powerful as Obama has been. If Hillary goes down, you will soon see they have no intention of Biden, Sanders or any old people. He is ready in the wings.
Our problem is the GOPe has been the powerful ones behind this party for too long.
“The surprise success of Donald Trump has thrown the GOP into disarray, ruining their carefully conceived plans of sending Jeb Bush to the general election.”...
Instead of to the general election, better send Bush to the trash can of the wannabe’s?
Haven’t you noticed? Don gets smoother and more presidentially commanding every time out of the gate. And more never before people every day are noticing Trump and liking what they see and hear.
No sweat.
TRUMP/CRUZ
2016!
One by one, the veil is lifted
He also despises Cruz. He is pushing Ohio Casick.
Good point, where’s the honor?
I don’t know why people keep repeating the lie that the GOP lied to get elected. There were plenty of people lying to themselves, but the GOP hasn’t hidden their hatred of conservatives. Take an honest look at what they promised (nothing)—and believe them.
Trump may be a carnival barker in comparison, but he’s making his offering loud and clear. I for one, don’t want to support Trump and I still disagree on him with much, but I believe he has balls. I am sick of hyphen-ism politics—gimme a street brawl!
I noticed the veil has been coming off a lot of them. I’ve listened to Medved since the days he was on KVI and even talked to him at one of the KVI picnics. Don’t ask me how, but the two of us somehow found ourselves alone by some picnic table and I didn’t know who he was until we introduced ourselves.
I consider him very smart, but the shine came off a bit when he started shilling for Romney because electable. The problem is that he is overtly NOT a Christian and it shows in his decision making.
At this point, when I DO listen to him, it is like listening to a liberal. In fact, if his insulting behavior towards trump had been on Air America it would have fit right in.
Wilson says we are being led into a cul-de-sac. At least you can turn around in a cul-de-sac. The goPEE is leading us into a dead end where there is no turning around for them.
Well, if you want to become a hankie twister over it, far be it from me to object.
However, I say Trump is man enough to HOLD their attention, right up to where they punch the TRUMP button on the voting machine, and strut out the door of the polling place with the certainty that It’s Morning In America....Again!
Hey, there, Rick: I am one of those "low-information" people that you're referring to...but just so that you know, I don't think that your insulting pejorative really applies to me since I have:
1) Graduated with a double major from Georgetown University;
2) Graduated from Vanderbilt University with both an MBA and a JD degree;
3) Earned a Master of Laws (LLM) from New York University;
4) Earned a CPA;
5) Passed the Bar Examination in Florida, New Jersey, New York and Texas; and
6) Consistently scored in the top 2% of every single standardized test that I've ever taken.
Oh, and I keep up with the news - probably too much, since I tend to put off work to keep current.
So, you see, I'm rather insulted at your accusation that one who supports Trump (and, in reality, Ted Cruz is my favorite) is a "low-information" anything. Actually, Rick, YOU ARE THE LOW-INFORMATION person here: you don't understand, obviously because you haven't bothered to open your mind enough to consider this simple and self-evident FACT: that Trump is YOUR creation - he exists as not only a candidate but the runaway leading candidate, because of YOU and those who think like you.
You have such contempt for the base of the Republican Party? OK, fine...then if we aren't wanted, we will leave. We are sick and tired of not having had a single genuine conservative at the top of the national ticket for the last 7 Presidential election cycles, and we're not going to put up with it for the 8th consecutive time. Even when we help you and your corrupt cronies to victory, we are dissed by you. TWICE we tossed out huge numbers of Dems, in 2010 and 2014 - and with control of Congress you and your corrupt cronies are so in bed with Obama that you can't even sit on your hands and do nothing, you had to get Bob Corker (Dead Man Walking, TN) to sponsor a bill that the Dems gladly passed to have the Iran treaty be called a "not treaty" in violation of both the Constitution and common sense, enlightened self-interest.
Well, you bone-headed, conceited, corrupt douche nozzle, if you don't like the base then kiss any chance of political power - and the perks that it brings - goodbye forever: we'll leave. Trump, Cruz and Carson are either treated fairly, are given a legitimate chance to debate and win the Presidential primary, OR YOUR PARTY WILL BECOME AS MUCH OF A RELIC AS THE WHIGS.
Your choice: listen to your base and change your ways, or don't. But, as I tell my kids, every choice brings with it consequences. Think about those consequences carefully.
A HIGH-information voter.
Maybe so, maybe not...but for sure he'd look better in a dress than that lying, corrupt old hag.
