AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - According to Savannah River Site officials, a potential security event is in progress that has triggered emergency response activities at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site.

Site barricades are currently closed to incoming traffic. There is no indication of a consequence beyond the Savannah River Site boundaries.

WFXG has a reporter on the way and will update you as we learn

...Probably some rotten food in the vending machine.

Radioactive Moon Pies. And the RC Cola has a very faint greenish glow in the dark.

Blinky the Three-Eyed Fish was unavailable for comment. ;)

Truck coming in to restock vending machines apparently aggitated bomb-sniffing dogs.

Cute warm and fuzzy explanation. Now, what's the real reason?

A Coke truck was entering H Area to service vending machines. During a routine inspection a bomb sniffing dog alerted on the truck. A second dog was brought in and it also alerted. That was enough to put the site on lock down. No traffic was allowed in or out of the barricades for a couple of hours. Also everyone in H Area had to remain indoors. No travel between building was allowed.

An off-site law enforcement investigation found no explosive residue or device on a truck that was inspected Monday afternoon during a three-hour lockdown at the Savannah River Site, according to site officials.

Possible explosive materials at the site were reported around 2:30 p.m. after electronic and canine scans of a vendor delivery truck indicated a possibility of explosive material on the truck.

The incident led to the site being placed in a lockdown mode, which prohibited anyone from entering the site and barricades were also set up to prevent incoming traffic.

At 5:52 p.m. on Monday, an “all clear was given and the site returned to normal activities at 5:52 p.m.,” SRS officials wrote in a final update.

“..seal their bomb in with Tyvek..”

and grease it right? Yeah, but no that will not fool a well trained dog that has been cycled on duty.

The failure comes at the hands of the handler, not the dog in most cases.

11 For those of us in other parts of the country, what is the Savannah River Site?

12 Used to make our nukes. Now they do nuclear research and cleanup. ...

Maybe someone else can enlighten me. I thought the SRS was the only site where tritium was made for our hydrogen bombs.

35+ years ago, I had a small amount of inside information about security at the Fort Know Bullion Depository, as well as the back-up security provided by Army assets at Fort Knox. Knowing that, and a little about the logistics of moving gold in large quantities, I’ve always said that knocking over Fort Knox is simply a practical impossibility.
