When I lived in New York, the court would call a pool of jurors. Each juror was given a number. As cases were called, juror numbers were drawn by lot to form a pool of potential jurors for that trial. The trial called could be civil or criminal. Those not seated went back into the big room to drink coffee.
I was picked for a jury on my last day of eligibility and spent six weeks listening to evidence. The jury ended up as a hung jury. Eleven for acquittal, one holdout for guilty.
