Women who get pregnant from rape or incest should be able to go to the emergency room for an "abortion pill," Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Thursday.
Speaking on Fox News Channels Your World with Neil Cavuto, the anchor asked Carson if he believes women should be able to get abortions in cases of rape or incest.
I would hope that they would very quickly avail themselves of the emergency room, and in the emergency room, they have the ability to administer RU-486 and other possibilities before you have a developing fetus, Carson said, more than five minutes into the interview.
RU-486 has been dubbed a chemical abortion pill by some anti-abortion groups. The National Right to Life website describes it as a pill used at five to seven weeks of pregnancy that kills an unborn baby whose heart has already begun to beat.
The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List is also opposed to it.
RU-486 is an abortifacient, a representative for the group said. Its only prescribed use is a chemical abortion. Susan B. Anthony List is solidly opposed to the use of RU-486.
Carsons response provoked Cavuto to ask him whether he believes life begins at conception.
Certainly once the heart starts beating, certainly at that point, Carson responded.
An email to the Carson campaign for clarification has not been returned.
Carson is a retired neurosurgeon. His views on abortion grabbed headlines on Thursday after a former colleague wrote a blog post claiming that in 1992 he studied parts of a fetal brain produced from an abortion.
Carson has been critical of Planned Parenthood after a string of undercover videos showed officials selling fetal tissue for scientific research.

It probably would be safer to deliver then to take these drugs or do an abortion. They can always put it up for adoption and never ever worry that they committed a murder.
You've actually answered my questions in your own post #36.
The semantics of the debate doesn't matter. The abortion question for rape/incest victims simply shouldn't be answered by Republicans. Get back to the old "no comment", stand your ground on being pro-life, and let the interviewer pound sand. It's a difficult question, but at the same time, it's simply gotcha politics that reinforces the leftist narrative that Republicans are too extreme on abortion.
Nevermind that rape/incest, as I've stated before, is statistically minuscule in the total number of actual abortions and is simply an out used by liberals to maintain the abortion status-quo.
Also known as a "spontaneous abortion".
Agreed. This is all part of playbook. They need to be able to answer this question. Rubio should have said those are his personal beliefs. Next question.
He didn't say anything even close to that. Stop putting words in his mouth.
They've got strategically placed swat teams for Dr. Carson. Amazing, when you have a man who said no one who worked to save babies lives while still in the wound could tolerate abortion yet they endlessly try to pin it on him.
I'm starting to think it wasn't GOPe tactics that lost us all those conservatives.
RU ( are you ) FOR. 86 ( to 86 someone is to kill them).
I think God planted this term in the minds of the drug creator to put a question to all of us.
Are you?
Ben Carson is. If not for that, he would have my vote.
No exceptions. The mother has lived, enough to have a chance to know her creator.
The baby is as innocent as a human can be.
Another of my favorites goes down in flames. Ta ta, Dr. Ben! Incredible about the kissing up to the liberals that’s going on.
Greg Gutfeld, on THE FIVE, incredibly (to me at least) agreed.
Any baby conceived in rape or incest does not deserve to live according to these two panderers. DISGUSTING!
That said, I think it is very important to consider the differences between using a post-coital method to prevent pregnancy vs. abortion. They are, in my opinion, vastly different - with the caveat that the ‘morning after’ pill be used just that way, as a morning after method to prevent implantation and pregnancy. I'm not saying that I am a big advocate of this, but I'm saying that IMHO one should not throw Ben Carson into the ‘pro-abortion’ camp because of this.
His very knowledgeable and reasonable suggestion does not take into account the overriding economic demands of PP, Stem Express and the other Baby-Parts-R-US companies.
I’ve wondered that same thing myself many times. One can surely obtain the morning-after pill after non-consensual sex. They don’t even have to admit that they were raped, which I understand is physically and emotionally traumatic.
I guess I have never understood how somebody gets raped and still gets pregnant in the era of modern morning-after pills. Unless you’re a prisoner of Ariel Castro or something.
Yes.
It can be obtained without prescription any time from any pharmacy.
Why not allow abortion for all nine months, and even a few hours after delivery? I.e., the way it is now.
That would make the “abortion issue” go away!
Carson is toast.
You don’t make sense.
Why not let the child be born and then put it up for adoption?
No exceptions for rape or incest!
You proposed that we allow the killing of babies conceived in rape, in order make the issue of killing babies conceived in rape “go away.”
If that makes sense, then allowing abortion at all times, for any reason, or no reason, should make the ENTIRE abortion issue go away.
No.
You are not understanding the issue.
