The news that Rick Perry has stopped paying all of his campaign staff following Thursday's debate is a sure sign of major troubles -- and could be the leading edge of the collapse of his campaign.
If this is the end -- and Perry's super PAC support could well keep him on life support for a bit longer -- it would be a remarkable bit of timing: Perry entered the 2012 presidential race as its frontrunner on August 13, 2011 -- almost four years to the day when it's become clear that his second bid for the presidency has faltered badly.
For Perry, that four year period speaks to just how important timing -- and performing -- are on the presidential level. And how fickle the public can be.
At this time in 2011, Perry was the talk of the political world. He had yet to enter the race -- he did so on the day of the now-deceased Iowa Straw Poll -- but polling suggested he was widely regarded by voters as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney that they had been shopping for.
Less than three months later, it was effectively over -- thanks to a series of poor debate performances capped off by "oops."

Dropping everything else for the moment, the dynamics of a guy telling women in this day and age that they weren’t smart enough to decide for themselves about a product like this...
Nobody had to be a women’s libber to realize this was just dead wrong.
If my daughter were demanded to have it, I would have been literally furious.
The act couldn’t possibly not bring in the dynamics you addressed as well. I’d have to agree.

I love FR. When the first post is word for word what you were thinking... lol
I’ve got your three causes for his demise right here:
1) he is a horrible candidate in this situation. He’s proved it twice. He worked out well in the races for TX Gov.; but it’s horses for courses.
2) I forgot that one.
3) I forgot that one, too.
They weren’t Google glasses. Just dumb glasses.
Basically the Trans-Texas Corridor included an agreement that we wouldn’t widen I35 or US75...no matter how bad we needed to.
And they intended to seize a huge piece of land where one of the east-west interstate intersections would be through eminent domain. Why should the landowners profit from the increased value of the land? Shouldn’t the state seize it and auction it back off?
Perry thought those details of the TTC either didn’t matter or wouldn’t be noticed. He was wrong on both counts.
I’m sure that folks in the state thought of certain things that I didn’t.
I didn’t want to see a massive influx of more things that would result in fewer U. S. workers being able to find work.
Who’s Gilmore??? /s
The end? Does he have cancer? My condolences! Don’t let the door hit you, Rick
“Riiiiiiiiiiick Perry!”
The Rick Perry Psyche Out is working.
That’ would be cool to 3d print!
I guess that IQ test would have been a good idea after all.
You remember well!
McPain, despite being the GOPe favorite, was on life support going into Iowa. Intrade had him at 2% chance of winning the nomination.
Then - when the Iowa results were in - Faux News and the rest of the GOPe lied and reported that he had finished 3rd - making a bigger deal about McCain’s “resurrection” than Huckabee’s victory. About a week later - if you had read the fine print - you would have found that McPain actually finished in 4th place behind Fred Thompson. But that didn’t matter. The manufactured narrative of a resurgent McPain became the reality.
4 years later, they would repeat this formula by depriving Santorum of his 1st place finish in Iowa for 2012’s GOPe favorite - Milt Romney.
The lesson is that if you are the GOPe/MSM favorite, it’s not over ‘til it’s over.
Just ask Thad Cochran.
Ding, ding, ding we have a winner folks!
Mr. Perry never had a beginning. Too soft on invaders.
