Study: More People Developing Dementia Earlier, Death Rates Soaring

Researchers found that people are developing dementia a decade earlier than they were 20 years ago, possibly due to factors such as pollution and insecticides, as reported by The Columbus Dispatch.

The study compared data from 21 Western countries between 1989 and 2010 and found that the disease is more commonly diagnosed in people in their late 40s, in addition to climbing death rates.

The research suggest the issue is particularly severe in the United States. Study authors say neurological deaths in men over the age of 75 have nearly tripled, and have risen more than five-fold in women. Scientists partially attribute this rise to environmental factors and widespread use of pesticides, according to the London Times.

...

Deaths caused by neurological disease have risen in 55- to 74-year-olds and have almost doubled in those over 75 years old, according to the study. Sixty percent of the increase in deaths were due to dementia, with 40 percent of deaths attributed to other neurological disease like Parkinson’s and motor neuron disease.

“The rate of increase in such a short time suggested a silent or even a hidden epidemic, in which environmental factors must play a major part, not just aging,” lead study author Colin Pritchard said.

Other researchers are careful to note that environmental factors are only a possible element of the findings, and in no way proven.

Where is your data to back that assertion?

Everyone is taking statins nowadays. I think that has a lot to do with it. While it’s not a proven side effect, there is lots of suspicion it, memory loss in some people, is caused by statins. In my own case, e.g., I’ve been having memory problems since I started Lipitor and want off it. Had zero problems before.

Ditto - the book “Grain Brain” calls dementia “Type 3 diabetes”.
And also explains why statins are bad for the brain - the author makes a lot of sense.

Wonder if drug use in this age group (young in the 1960’s) could have anything to do with this.

I made an observation that heavy drinkers I know seemed to have a higher rate of cancer. Recently a study confirmed that observation.

20 years ago we weren’t bombarded with constant info.
I’d bet that today we view more images, info, quick graphics than we did even five years ago let alone 20. Too bad we can’t take a person from 1850 and bring them into 2015 and see if they don’t have a breakdown within the first 12 hours.

There’s just so much that a brain can hold. It is bound to shut down sooner.

i’d love to forget the last 7 years.

I blame a lot of this on the widespread use of statin drugs.

The FDA on Statin drugs:

FDA is advising consumers and health care professionals that: Cognitive (brain-related) impairment, such as memory loss, forgetfulness and confusion, has been reported by some statin users.

People being treated with statins may have an increased risk of raised blood sugar levels and the development of Type 2 diabetes.

Some medications interact with lovastatin (brand names include Mevacor) and can increase the risk of muscle damage.

Leftism brings on dementia in later life. That means the leftism has ossified.

So compared to pollution 50 years ago we don't have 'pollution' now.....

No doubt. In the sixties, if you went into New York for a day, your neck got grimy. Just like the song said.

I think dementia is caused by people watching too much TV/television. All that liberal crap turns your brain neurons to mush. The mind wasn't meant to absorb so much meaningless stimulus that doesn't contribute to your surviving until the next day.

Must be vaccines, over medication, margarine, and Crisco to blame.

And birth control, pesticides, etc.

This doesn’t make sense. We’ve reduced the use of pesticides and lowered pollution. So if those are causes, incidents should be on the decline, not on the rise.

"Ask anyone who has a garden what could they grow without insecticides and they will tell you 'nothing'."

Chickens.

A fox murdered my three chickens back in May. They were five years old. I was not aware of how well they controlled the insect population till they were no longer here.

I miss my chicklets!

Niacin controls cholesterol.

My Dr has me on 1000 mg twice a day, as I react poorly to every statin on the market.

Perhaps your doctor will allow you to try it?

(Oh, one more thing, work up to that level with smaller doses increased every few days, or you’ll get an annoying flush)

Without insecticides, I am growing tomatoes, beans, sugarsnap peas, arugula, lettuce, amaranth, peppers, melons, cucumbers, squash, artichoke, blueberries, raspberries, cherries and peaches.

Flea beetles stunted the eggplant, and Japanese beetles messed up some peaches and and they’re all over the bean leaves and some years the plum curculio is unkind to the cherries and peaches. But I’m freezing food and giving it away.

Now if my life depended on my garden and the insects were a problem I’d spray. But so far the let it be approach is working okay.

“Ask anyone who has a garden what could they grow without insecticides and they will tell you ‘nothing’.”

We have a gardening thread on FR, new one every Friday, and our Freeper gardeners grow all types of food without using harmful insecticides.

I learned to grow in containers and had 135 containers in my small garden with various foods growing in them. The vast majority of those food plants I grew from seed. I did not use insecticides.

Another thing that doesn't make sense is that with cleaner air, more people have COPD. I see more and more people with tubes stuck up their noses. Maybe it's the latest medical fad.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that we are being sprayed with something.
