Watch Jake Tapper's interview with Donald Trump on "State of the Union" Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.

Washington (CNN)

GOP presidential candidates on Saturday were quick to condemn Donald Trump's controversial comments about Fox News host and GOP debate moderator Megyn Kelly.

The remarks resulted in an outcry from conservatives and resulted in Erick Erickson disinviting Trump from the RedState Gathering, a conservative event featuring GOP presidential hopefuls this weekend in Atlanta.

Trump tried to clarify his comments after the interview, tweeting, "Re Megyn Kelly quote: 'you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever' (NOSE). Just got on w/thought"

“But just as he did when asked about Trump’s questioning of Sen. John McCain’s war record last month, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz declined to criticize Trump on Saturday.”

Cruz is again playing this right.

These Republicans are more upset with Trump than they are with Obama, Hillary and the other Democrats.

They're a tag-team.

My bet is that at some point Trump is going to withdraw and endorse Cruz.

Donald would be bored stiff as POTUS.

Would it really be Cruz who gets his endorsement? Trump doesn’t strike me as a Constitutionalist.

"My bet is that at some point Trump is going to withdraw and endorse Cruz."

If Donald thought Cruz was ready and could win, he would. Trump said in 2014, that he would only run if the right candidate didn't emerge. He said he loves what he does, that he didn't want to stop doing what he does to run for office. But that he loves America more.

I don't think Cruz is ready because he doesn't understand the economy as evidenced by his trying to pass fast track authority for Obama to negotiate more job killing so-called free trade agreements.

View this video it speaks for many of us.

Also, did Cruz get the short straw on time? seems he didn’t get to speak much

Cruz is not going to be the nominee. He may be the brightest and most articulate, but he lacks the ability to connect to the voters on a gut level. He is a policy wonk. And his open rebellion against Senate leadership will ensure that the GOPe torpedos him. First they get rid of Trump and then Cruz is next. Then the choice is between GOPe candidates.

"you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever".

Nothing ticks me off more than faux outrage that has its genesis in someone making an assumption/interpretation about what someone else says and then that interpretation becomes cast in stone as reality. Sheesh.....I think it fairly clear from the context that all Trump was saying was that Kelly had that look in her eye that she was mad and out to get him. That's it and end of issue and there is nothing about menstruation in Trump's comment. Erick Erickson, Fiorini and all the rest who want to make hay on the 'interpretation being the truth' are just plain trash and should be shunned.

Trump has the advantage of celebrity gained thru 12 years on TV. People think they know him. Trump can attract voters across partisan lines. His biggest problem is getting Reps to support him, including conservatives.

Also, Trump must be better prepared to talk specifics and stay on message. I have no doubt he is a quick study and learned from the first debate. He will be better prepared for the second debate September 16. In the meantime, he will be busy trying to prevent an implosion of his support.

His appearances on the Sunday shows are fraught with danger but also opportunity. It should be an interesting morning.

I’m getting so sick of this and some freepers falling for this nonsense. Trump is not buffoonish. He is from NYC. That’s how they talk. In my opinion he is the only one who can beat Hillary if the dam establishment gets out of the way. I do think he likes Cruz and make him VP.

You’ve made several good points on this thread. Not to directly compare the two because Reagan had been a successful governor and Trump has not held public office, but both have the advantage of celebrity, i.e. name recognition and being well known and liked from their entertainment careers. This is not something to casually dismiss when we remember the nature of the “low information voter” who probably starts paying attention to the presidential elect about mid-October 2016. They are certainly not going to be following wonky policies or political ideology.
