A supervolcano in the heart of America's northwest has the potential to blanket the US in a 'nuclear winter'.
If it were to erupt, the Yellowstone supervolcano would be one thousand times as powerful as the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption, experts claim.
While it has lain dormant for more than 70,000 years, scientists say that we can't rule out the possibility eruption this may some day take place - although they say the chances are extremely slim.
The eruption, the scientists say, could kill as many as 90,000 people almost instantly and release a 10 ft (3-meter) layer of molten ash 1,000 miles (1,609km) from the park.
'The ash would block off all points of entry from the ground, and the spread of ash and gases into the atmosphere would stop most air travel, just as it did when a much smaller volcano erupted in Iceland in 2010,' the magazine writes.

I very specifically will not comment on the positive and negative aspects of that.
LOL! Funny but probably true.
I was there two months ago. Guaranteed true. Chinese tourists outnumbered everyone else 2:1.
LOL...sounds like you have been to the Park recently?
I live near YSP and told the wife last year when we spent a couple of days driving around that the busloads of Chinese tourists looked like the same tourists who followed us all over Africa earlier in the year.
Sharkcano!!
Snakes on your tv? EEK! Call the exterminator!
It was one of those dreams that stuck with me through the years that I never
applied to RL or thought about in a realistic way.
I remember watching a TV episode that showed predictions of how the US will look after the Madrid lets loose. The Niagaran escarpment in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula survives in part along with high elevations in the lower peninsula. The mcshots are on the edge. Interesting times ahead but man generated ones may end it all first. Have fun on your vacation ol occupant of the former white hut.
I love that graphic except for silver-faced guy. Replace him and it would be close to perfect.
And it’ll all be the fault of the ‘evil Americans’.
Don’t praise Gaia.
Flyover country. This will never make the news on either of the coasts.
Don’t feel alone. We lived for 20 years with the big one coming to the Washington coast. Just had a new piece in the New Yorker a few weeks ago.
Instead of ripping taxpayers off & bulling companies with the EPA’s political agenda outrageous junk science lies, all efforts for surviving real climate change from real natural disasters we know will happen should have been #1 on the climate sciences research and development priority all along. Such issues as a national dried food reserve etc enough to last at least a year would have been a reasonable and obtainable policy without bankrupting the nation. But no instead were making Lock Box/Carbon Credits Al Bore Jr and other shysters richer by ripping everyone off in the name of a false earth goddess and accomplishing absolutely nothing.
Sounds great! I’ll bring the pulled pork!
Well we got some of the gals on that already.*
Maybe you could spare some fingerbowls?
FW, yeah, I took you for the “down ‘n dirty” type... ;)
Oh Noes!
Shoot, I was thinkin’ that I know a Florida gal who could whoop either of them Miss Piggy ladies...one at a time anyways.
