The timebomb under Yellowstone: Experts warn of 90,000 immediate deaths and a 'nuclear winter'

A supervolcano in the heart of America's northwest has the potential to blanket the US in a 'nuclear winter'.

If it were to erupt, the Yellowstone supervolcano would be one thousand times as powerful as the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption, experts claim.

While it has lain dormant for more than 70,000 years, scientists say that we can't rule out the possibility eruption this may some day take place - although they say the chances are extremely slim.

The eruption, the scientists say, could kill as many as 90,000 people almost instantly and release a 10 ft (3-meter) layer of molten ash 1,000 miles (1,609km) from the park.

'The ash would block off all points of entry from the ground, and the spread of ash and gases into the atmosphere would stop most air travel, just as it did when a much smaller volcano erupted in Iceland in 2010,' the magazine writes.

A super volcano nuclear winter? That sounds like a cure for global warming. Let’s get our CO2 level cranking so we can counteract mother nature’s natural cooling. We can do it! We can control nature!

Or we could be hit by an Asteriod. Or Bammy’s Iran could EMP us. Which is most likely?

But...but...what if an asteroid the size of Hawaii crashes into the Earth at the same time that this Volcano erupts? What then?? How many dead? I NEED to know!!

And...will Climate Change make the situation better or worse?

I am extremely skeptical of so called expert scientist given their propensity to out right lie and deceive in order to keep their government grants coming. The global warming cabal has shown them for what they are.

That would ensure 90,000 dead at least.

Once every 600,000 years, Yellowstone erupts. Once every 10 million years a meteor about a mile across hits Earth. I think that in the foreseeable future we are much more menaced by government overreach than being buried in volcanic ash or incineration.

It would be a global extinction event in this day and age.

Toba was the only one bigger than the largest Yellowstone eruption.

Yellowstone is active and is overdue. How big will it be is anyones guess. There were a couple smaller ones after the big Yellowstone boom. The most recent big one was in 1883 and it was much less than yellowstones. The best one to compare even remotely would be Tambora in 1815.

Keep in mind that the caldera under Yellowstone is several times bigger than they thought. That was only discovered lately.
