Trumps style is not calculated, but he understandsand always hasthat his brand is all about the bombast. One of the things I learned while reporting that cover story so long agoand in dealing with him off and on over the years since thenis that a lot of what he says and does, he does with a subtle wink. Its as if to say, Look, I know that maybe you dont think that The Art of the Deal is one of the greatest business books ever written, or that this golf course I own or that hotel I just put my name on is the best in the world. But I say it anyway, because thats just who I am, and its how I talk. And why should I change? Is it not working?
This is why all three of us laughed that day in his office when he said, But if I did run, Id win! There was a funny charm in that. It would have been inauthentic had he not said it. Its part of the reason I like Donald Trump. Always have.
Another reason I like him is that he is, as Stone says, a billionaire with everyman tastes. Hes not RomneyEddie Haskell with a Cayman Islands bank account, my Hollywood GOP friend called him. I remember Trump was once invited to a fancy charity gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with all the Upper East Side eliteprivate equity king Henry Kravis and his then-wife Carolyne Roehm; John Gutfreund, then the CEO of Salomon Brothers, etc., etc. Trump hated it. He left after about 10 minutes, went back to his Trump Tower apartment, ate popcorn and watched the Giants on Monday Night Football while the swells sipped champagne.

There are some great insights into Trump’s personality and operating style in this piece.
I don’t think the country is ready for another BUT it might not be ready for a Trump either. Both could be answered in tonights debate.
LoL.
Now this is honing in on the appeal of Donald Trump ... although his polling success is mostly due to being the obvious opposite of the horrible McConnell/Boehner/Bush gOpE (imho).
Excellent article. Another story of him preference for being home than out socializing. Trump the family man?
Great article....
He is so much fun to watch...he’s one of us, normal, outspoken, non-p.c. crap...says it like it is...
I think he’s going to make it!!!
Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! I noticed illegal immigration seemed to slip his mind.
Long haul? If I had to stump for Jeb for the long haul, I would prefer hibernation.
Roger Stone, eh? ..man he’s a tough one..been around a long time and can get out of hand, but he is seeing the truth about the rage in the ranks that some others are too afraid to acknowledge.
Tonight will give us a sense of how Trump responds to unfamiliar territory. The pressure is intense..
Could it be that this jillionaire has... a redneck side???
Oh, lol.
Well, he’s got a mind of his own. That is a huge part of the battle. Better to be wrong for the right reasons than to be right because of some gauzy consensus that could go away tomorrow.
>> Thats in contrast to, say, the Ted Cruz campaign headquarters, where dozens of staffers and volunteers man the phones, frantically try to raise money, bash out direct mail pitches and mull campaign strategies for Iowa and beyond.
My, how that sentence resonates with me.
It encapsulates just how I feel about Republican politics.
In NO personal communication to me — not a single one — zero, zip, zilch, nada — do ANY of the candidates give the slightest indication that they understand, or care about, me.
All of their letters, calls, emails — ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of them — are REQUESTS FOR MY DAMNED MONEY.
INCLUDING ALL of Ted Cruz’s. ALL of them.
If I got a single heartfelt email from ANY of them that only spoke of what the candidate would do for ME, and was not a naked guilt-trip begging for more of my MONEY, I’d faint.
And then I note this fact:
Donald Trump wants to be president, and he is SPENDING HIS OWN MONEY to get there. His own money! Can you imagine that?
Long article, you say.
Ping to myself.
You’ll like it.;-)
Pretty good article, from a guy who probably doesn’t agree with Trump politically but still likes him as a person. So overall a pretty fair piece, does not fawn over him at all but also isn’t a hit piece.
I wish more journalism were done like this.
