A triple homicide in Florida is suspected to be a Wiccan ritual killing related to the blue moon, police said Tuesday. The three victims, all from the same family, were found after a welfare check on Friday, July 31, said Escambia County Sheriffs Office spokesman Sgt. Andrew Hobbes.
It appears that this might be connected to some type of Wiccan ritual killing and possibly tied to the blue moon, Hobbes told NBC News. A blue moon is what its called when there are two full moons in the same calendar month.
Voncile Smith, 77, and her two sons, Richard, 49, and John, 47, were discovered when one of the sons employers realized he hadnt shown up for work.
Voncile and John both died of blunt force trauma and had their throats cut, police said. Richard was shot in the ear, as he came into the house, and had his throat cut, Hobbes said. Police believe a claw hammer was used to commit the murders, Hobbes said.
No evidence of a forcible entry was found and, while police have spoken with a person of interest in the case, no arrests have been made, Hobbes said.
When asked how the evidence suggests these are ritualistic or Wiccan killings Sgt. Hobbes said, The injuries to the victims, the positions of the bodies and also the person of interest right now is also a practitioner.
Wicca is a religion that claims to draw on the pre-Christian traditions of Western Europe, and while most practitioners engage in some form of magical practice and nature worship, they may believe in a variety of deities. The religion does not encourage the practice of ritual killings.
The number of Americans who identify as Wiccan has risen from about 8,000 in 1990 to 342,000 in 2008, according to American Religious Identification Survey data. The ranks of prominent American Wiccans include Margot Adler, a well-known National Public Radio journalist who died in 2014.
According to Hobbes, Richard Smith worked for Homeland Security and a supervisor contacted the sheriffs office, who dispatched a unit to check the home at 4605 Deerfield Drive in Pensacola. Authorities believe the trio was killed sometime after 7:00 p.m., on the previous Tuesday, three days earlier. Police are continuing their investigation.
Its frightening to think about. Especially when you have small children, neighbor Ken Lester said, according to affiliate WECT. To find out that it was this weird, satanic cult, witchcraft whatever, is just really unsettling.
Had a girlfriend who lived in DeLand, FL when I was young and sometimes we’d go out to nearby Casa Dega and drive through the neighborhood. Very weired vibe in that place.
+1
Not really, I know lots of Wiccans. Some of the bigger mouths definitely lean liberal(don't they always), but lot of them here in Georgia are actually conservative. I have noticed there are many military people involved. While some covens or groves are very sexual and go into excesses, most do not. Lord Merlin who was the most respected Wiccan in the state of Georgia was a very brilliant man. He was Professor emeritus of Philosophy at Emory and held 5 doctorates while being able to read 27 languages. He was also very much a conservative and a Republican to the point of being a an “unreconstructed Southerner”.Most are actually very working class and have those sensibilities. Now if you go into California or New England that is different. A lot just depends on where you are.
Wicca - the other religion of peace.
“Ancient blue moon ritual” - bull$hit. The definition of the second full moon in a calendar month as a blue moon started as a mistake in the pages of Sky and Telescope magazine in 1946. As a “tradition” it’s less than 70 years old, and did not even take off until the 1980’s when it became a question in the board game Trivial Pursuit.
The Romans were the first to use the Julian calendar, where months are decoupled from the phase of the moon. Few people or civilizations anywhere used a calendar with months were different than lunations. Therefore, there were never two full months in any ancient traditional calendars. Total bosh.
Gee, who knew? A homicide committed three days BEFORE the blue moon is somehow related to the blue moon? (Eye roll)
She died in 2014. What’s your source?
Oh Yeah?!
Then how do you explain the song of that title written in the 1930s?
Blue moon
you saw me standing alone
without a dream in my heart
without a love of my own
Bomb ba ba bomb
A-dang a-dang dang
ding a dang dong
Blue Moon
Blue moon blue moon.
The Guardian, I know, Libs, but they are running an article “Wicca Experts slam Sheriff over calling triple murder witchcraft”

Someone said Satanism or Santeria, sounds possible.
Thank you, friend.
She died in 2014.
I believe that was the point At death she would indeed bow her knee to Jesus Christ as everyone will - either now or later
If Hell is the loneliness of being without God while His eternal transcendence goes on, is that not Hell enough?
“According to old folklore,” some people say, the second full Moon in a calendar month is called a “blue Moon.” They go on to explain that this is the origin of the expression “once in a blue Moon.” But it isn’t true! The term “blue Moon” has been around a long time, well over 400 years, but its calendrical meaning has become widespread only in the last 25 years. - See more at: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/celestial-objects-to-watch/once-in-a-blue-moon/#sthash.AHy8R1iR.dpuf
Run a search on “fivefold kiss”.
I’m not sure I follow you. “Blue moon” meaning the second full moon in a month with two full moons is very old.
No, the phrase “blue moon” may be old, but applying it to that specific meaning has only arisen in the last couple of centuries. So no ancient religions even knew of the notion, much less applied any significance to it. (Wicca isn’t exactly ancient, but bases itself on some more ancient traditions)
