We Spoke to the Hackers Who Defaced Donald Trump’s Website

Telecomix is a hacktivist group of loosely connected individuals who are primarily known for bringing clean lines of communication to war torn areas where information is suppressed. In their own parlance, the group's guiding principle is "datalove," meaning they want to spread information far and wide while actively preventing it from being needlessly repressed.

To give you a couple of examples, during the 2012 conflict in Gaza, Telecomix provided dial-up internet lines to help people get their stories out to the rest of the world during an internet blackout. They also figured out how to provide a mass message to the people of Syria after detecting that their internet was being surveilled by the Assad government.

Their most recent action, however, was targeting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's website in a bizarre stunt meant to commemorate the career of outgoing Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Yesterday, Trump's website was defaced with a personal message to Stewart that began with a thank you: "[We] would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many happy years of quality journalism and entertainment you and your team have undertaken at Comedy Central..."

I’m thinking you’ve really made it into the big time when your site is targeted.

Everyone involved should be in jail. Hacking and all online should be treated as crimes. Shut them down.

Telecomix Canada hacktivist: Oh no, we've been around for years and years... We're not hidden, we don't make a point of hiding, we just don't do stuff that's illegal, or outright illegal, as a rule. And in this case, it's kind of a merry prank. I don't think everybody should have a big fit about it.

Unless I am mistaken, it IS a crime and it should be treated as such. It may cross over, depending on content, into terrorism. In any case, US and Canadian authorities should hunt these people down, drag them off to jail. No mercy. (I've had my company and personal sites hacked before and it is impacting in reputation, time, and money.)

Looks like they switched from a noble cause to just a bunch of political hacks.

Someday the hackers may meet a girl.
They might see a cloud or the sun for the first time.
Maybe even meet William Shatner. Imagine that!

But so many of them listen to the advice of their parents:
“Don't go near the cellar door!”

They remind me of the SNL episode with the trekkies:

William Shatner: You know, before I answer any more questions there's something I wanted to say. Having received all your letters over the years, and I've spoken to many of you, and some of you have traveled... y’know... hundreds of miles to be here, I'd just like to say... GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show! I mean, look at you, look at the way you're dressed! You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!

[ a crowd of shocked and dismayed Trekkies.... ]

I mean, how old are you people? What have you done with yourselves?

[ to “Ears” ] You, you must be almost 30... have you ever kissed a girl?

[ “Ears” hangs his head ]

Hackers, is their a product or service that you can provide that would benefit potential customers, and would necessitate leaving mom and dad’s basement, and putting on street clothes?

The branch of Telecomix that took responsibility for the Trump defacement was Telecomix Canada, a team that rarely makes headlines for their actions, which predominantly focus around securing safe communication for dissidents and activists without drawing much attention to themselves.

President Trump would send in the bombers.

...Trump has deep pockets. If he sets his PIs upon these clowns, he will find them. He will sue them into oblivion, especially if they are in the United States.

I find it amazing these people—like the Harvard students who pranked Trump and the idiot kids who pranked Scott Walker—are unable to defeat the IDEAS espoused by the candidates. Instead, they try to pull pathetic stunts.

Really retarded...no, beyond retarded. At least most retarded kids work hard at being mainstreamed...these “smart” kids (or think they are smart) focus instead on playing the fool.

Yes, indeed, exactly their method. They spit on those that disagree with them (their implanted opinion), and simply cannot argue or defend their position using logic, reason, data or history. And they have been allowed to use hat method with zero reproach.
