Here we go: Senate Dems falling into line to support Obama’s disastrous Iran deal

Honestly, I’d much prefer a pure party-line vote in which the GOP’s bid to block the deal goes down in flames rather than some excruciating Senate kabuki where they almost — but not quite — get enough Democratic votes to reach a two-thirds majority. If Chuck Schumer’s going to let his caucus force America to swallow this sh*t sandwich because it would be too embarrassing for poor Barack if they joined Republicans in stopping it, he should have the balls to vote with them. Instead we’re almost certainly going to be treated to a Democratic version of “failure theater,” where something like 12 Dems are freed to vote with the GOP knowing full well that that’ll leave McConnell just short of the 67 votes he needs to override Obama’s veto of a resolution of disapproval.

Remember, none of this would be possible if not for McConnell’s and Corker’s grand sellout of the Constitution’s Treaty Clause. Schumer and Reid should be scrambling right now to find 67 yays lest the deal fail. Instead McConnell’s trying to find 67 nays lest it succeed. And there aren’t many Democratic undecideds left to get after three more fencesitters announced today that they’re voting with Obama:

Today, three Democratic Senators came out for the Iran deal: Tim Kaine of Virginia, Bill Nelson of Florida, and Barbara Boxer of California. The math now looks increasingly difficult for the deal’s opponents…

Taken together, Nelson and Kaine are key because they reduce the size of the pool of Dems thought to be gettable by the opposition. The group of around eight or nine Democrats who backed the original oversight bill have long been seen as the most likely to oppose the accord. In addition to Nelson and Kaine, those include: Chuck Schumer, Heidi Heitkamp, Richard Blumenthal, Joe Donnelly, Michael Bennet, Robert Menendez (who has said he’ll vote No), and Angus King (an independent who caucuses with Dems).

Take Nelson and Kaine out of that pool, and you’re left with around seven Senate Dems who seem like they could genuinely still vote No (one, Menendez, is already a declared No). Seven others who are thought to be undecided, or at least who can’t be ruled out as No votes: Harry Reid, Chris Coons, Benjamin Cardin, Joe Manchin, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Tom Carper. If all of them vote No, that’s 14 Senate Dems opposing the deal. Opponents need 13 in order to get 67 Senators to override Obama’s veto of a measure blocking the accord.

So McConnell needs 13 of those 14 to vote no to have any real shot of blocking the deal, one of whom is Harry Reid and two of whom, Carper and Manchin, are already leaning towards voting yes per Greg Sargent. Sargent allows that there may be a few others, like Bob Casey and Ron Wyden, who are also on the fence, but how likely is it that any Democrat apart from a stalwart hawk like Bob Menendez would feel so strongly about the deal that he’d be willing to side with the GOP on a very close vote where a single nay could be decisive? The only chance Republicans have of stopping this is with an avalanche of Democratic votes such that those breaking with Obama can share responsibility, and the only way that’s going to happen is if Schumer throws his full weight against the deal. He won’t. If he were going to do that, he’d have done it already to give Kaine, Nelson, Boxer and the rest pause before they committed.

So the deal is as good as done. Who cares what Americans think?

yg

That’s some trendline, and it’s apparent even though the phrasing of YouGov’s question is a bit favorable towards the White House. Sanctions, after all, will certainly be lifted but whether Iran’s nuclear activity will be meaningfully “limited” depends on how thorough the agreement’s enforcement mechanisms are. Early indications are … not encouraging. Good work, Schumer.

Here’s Benjamin Netanyahu looking ahead to a new golden age in the Middle East in which every country in the region is armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons.

I'm a registered Republican (at this time). But I can't really be mad at Demorats. They are doing what they do.

It is the Republicans that turned the constitution on its head. This is on Mitch and John and people that have empowered them - which includes me I guess.

Never again. Never!

You are asking a party that threw the S. Vietnamese under the bus ushering in the “killing fields” to worry about millions being killed. Not going to happen.

Once Obama is out of office, if he decides to ever leave, he will be in charge of a world wide “charity”, the likes of which has never be seen. I think he will control over a trillion dollars to push socialist progressive agendas. He will “organize” every huge foundation and corporation out there. He will shake down governments and the money will roll in. Anyone think Obama’s gonna stop just “fundamentally” transforming America?

The dems are gonna get their cuts. And the dems that don’t take their cuts will be cut down.

What is wrong with some American Jews?

American Jews today (to a large degree) are the scions of Jews who left a Socialist Europe and who had already traded their identification with being Jewish for a chance to live and for a Socialist worldview, which precludes a Creator. If they hadn't dropped their religion in Europe due to pogroms or Socialism, they dropped it here in America when they couldn't find jobs which didn't require them to work on Saturdays and Jewish holidays, or when they couldn't find kosher food in far-flung communities, or synagogues or other ritual requirements--or Jewish spouses. Thus, the majority of Jews in America have only a tenuous connection to what it really means to be a Jew. They did not see their parents or grandparents doing much in the way of Jewish rituals, or openly supporting Israel. It was a joke that after your Bar Mitzvah, the phylacteries never again saw the light of day. In more modern times, it became more "bar" than "mitzvah", as newly affluent Jews sought to outdo one another in splendor and showmanship for the Bar Mitzvah reception. It was the reception which eclipsed the actual purpose of the Bar Mitzvah ritual.

Thus religiously pinioned, today's non-religious American Jews are much more interested in go-along, get-along rather than raising the ire of their neighbors over religious rituals they don't begin to understand, much less value. It's like Esau trading his birthright for a bowl of common pottage. Therefore, they are not acting like JEWS. They are acting like a debased, bastardized version of Jews. Such people do not value Israel as a consequence. Why should they? It's a distant land, they know little about it, they don't hold dear the revered sites of their ancestors. Thus, you have these unfortunate people, who never had an authentic Jewish education, voting for causes which substitute for the natural Jewish mercy: "green" projects, more welfare for the masses, anything which might give world peace a chance (as urged by John Lennon and the others these areligious Jews got their moral coaching from instead of the Torah).

Do you begin to understand? You cannot lump all American Jews together. The Orthodox Jews solidly support conservative causes, because those are much more in line with Torah values than libby profligate nonsense. Orthodox Jews hold Israel dear. Their sons and daughters very often go to yeshiva and seminary there, and frequently stay to make their home there. The sacred sites: the Western Wall, Rachel's Tomb, Machpela (the cave where Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah are buried), the graves of Torah sages, legendary synagogues, etc. are not just names to religious Jews; they visit these sites, pray at them, dream of them. I remember the tears I shed in joy and reverence when at last, I was able to travel to Israel and kiss the Western Wall as I prayed there. Observant Jews who VALUE Israel would rather die than sacrifice Eretz Yisroel ("The Land of Israel").

I hope this answers your question, Farmer Dean.

You had better get mad at Democrats, because they — or more precisely the left — are the root cause of all our problems. It wasn’t the GOPe that spent the last 70 years marching through our institutions and undermining our society. It was the left.

If you go into a college faculty lounge, you won’t find GOPe there. You’ll find leftists. They’re the ones indoctrinating the next generation.

If you go into the writers huddle for the John Stewart show or look at who’s cranking out the movie scripts that your kids watch and absorb, you won’t find the GOPe there. You’ll find leftists, everyone single one of whom supports the Democrat party because it puts their worldview into action.

At the forefront of every political or social movement designed to change your country into something you loathe, you will find leftists deeply committed to the Democrat party, and you will find Democrats deeply committed to the left’s ideas.

Yeah, the GOPe sucks, but they’re just a symptom. If you’re focused on them and not on the root cause, namely the left and its agent the Democrat party, then you are focused in the wrong place.

The factionalism within Judaism is ferocious. Especially between Ashkenazi (Eastern European) and Sephardic (Middle Eastern) Jews. Even in Israel. Even in Jerusalem itself.

Ashkenazi are also most American Jews, and no, they don't care if the Sephardic Jews are killed. In fact, many of them would prefer it, up to and including losing Israel to accomplish it. Ashkenazi Jews adopted Judaism, while Sephardic Jews are the actual Middle Eastern Jews of the Bible.

Powers and Principalities...

I think you give Obama too much credit. At times I think he’s doing exactly what he wants to do. But more than likely there is a power behind him that calls all the shots. This guy came from obscurity to the presidency in less than a decade. Like a turtle on a fencepost, someone put him there.
