Yes, many renters vote for things they think others will pay for. Lo and behold, the rents go up and incomes do not go up.

The lease/buy decision for a car is a complicated one, and the right decision depends on many factors such as (1) will you use the car for business purposes?; (2) How long do you plan to keep the car? (3) How many miles do you plan to drive each year?

I buy (used) cars, because they are for personal (not business) use, I drive 15-20K miles per year, and I hold onto them until they are almost fully depreciated. However, someone who can deduct the lease expense, drives 10-12K per year, and wants a shiny new car every three years (e.g., a real estate agent) is probably better off leasing.

A tax cut had been approved for the next year. The $300 was given in advance because Bush was going to “stimulate” the economy. Had you not gotten the $300 in 2007 you would have gotten it in 2008 anyway. But the 2008 tax cut was decreased by $300 the next year. That’s the way it was for millions and millions of people. Your situation must have been different.

Another thing Bush did. If you bought a house you got a tax break of, I think it was $7,000, that had to be paid back over the next few years. Obama came in and people who bought houses got an $8,000 rebate that they did not have to pay back and it was retro-active back to January 1, 2009. The difference in closing on a house on December 31, 2008 and Jan 2nd, 2009 was a $7,000 load as opposed to an $8,000 rebate.

I assume Obama did it just to piss more people off at Bush even though he was already gone. Maybe that was the first “Bush’s fault” excuse.

You seem to have a grasp of prior tax code/rebate.

How about running up some numbers that can be used in the upcoming elections?

Don’t get TOO deep though (remember who we’re dealing with)

I try to get people to use the same $300 dollar rebate but compared with current administration waste

How much is a million, a billion, a trillion ... etc

Their eyes go wobbly before I can even get them to compare it what they make!

It’s not a matter of how much they pay - that is variable...

You have to acknowledge that home owners also have yearly maintenance costs in addition to taxes and all that adds up.

The bottom calculation is how much and does that break even or cost more? Too many here seem to think that it breaks in favor of home ownership without actually adding up the costs (and time to maintain). There are actual benefits but most are not financial unless you are living with the idea that housing prices will constantly go up...

I challenge that attitude. I am talking about reality, not what the home sellers say! Really, you can lose thousands of dollars even after many years!
