Planned Parenthood Defund Bill Fails in Senate; Democrats Claim Baby Parts Aid Women's Health

The U.S. Senate has rejected a bill to defund Planned Parenthood and transfer its estimated $500 million in federal funds to other women's health sources.

Senate Bill 1881 failed to get the 60 votes required to have debate closed and a vote on the proposed legislation granted, with the results largely falling along party lines.

Introduced by Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, S. 1881 called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood and placing it in other sources for women's health.

"All funds no longer available to Planned Parenthood will continue to be made available to other eligible entities to provide women's health care services," read S. 1881.

"Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be made available to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, or to any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, successors, or clinics."

For years, pro-life activists have attempted to push legislation removing the estimated $500 million Planned Parenthood annually receives from the federal government.

Last month, a pro-life group named the Center for Medical Progress released undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood officials speaking about selling aborted baby body parts.

In the first video released, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood's senior director for medical services, spoke about selling baby body parts while eating a salad and drinking wine.

"We've been very good at getting heart, lung, liver … I'm not gonna crush that part," said Nucatola in the video. "I'm going to basically crush below, I'm not gonna crush above, and I am gonna see if I can get it all intact."

"At the national office, we have a litigation and law department which just really doesn't want us to be the middle people for this issue right now … But I will tell you that behind closed doors these conversations are happening with the affiliates."

Other videos released provided more evidence indicating that Planned Parenthood profited from the sale of aborted baby parts.

For their part, pro-choice activists have argued that the videos were deceptively edited and that, at worst, Planned Parenthood provides human tissue for research purposes, which is legal.

During the debate over S. 1881, supporters of the bill argued that the bill would place the money in community health centers untarnished by political scandals like Planned Parenthood.

"Instead of subsidizing a political group, this bill would protect federal funding for health services for women," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

"Instead of subsidizing a political group, this bill would insure funds continue to flow to community health centers and hospitals that provide more comprehensive health services and may have many, many more facilities nationwide."

Critics of the bill, including Senator Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., argued that the bill would have unjustly harmed Planned Parenthood and put those funds in facilities that are ill-equipped to provide more healthcare for women.

"Millions of American women depend on Planned Parenthood for much-needed health services," said Sen. Reid, who called the bill "just another Republican attack on the health of millions of women."

"Here we are once again, faced with another Republican attempt to limit women's access to health care."

Although S. 1881 was defeated, other congressional efforts in response to the furor over the undercover videos including an investigation of Planned Parenthood are still under development.

“Claim Baby Parts Aid Women’s Health”

Didn’t Mengle say something like that? So according to the Democrats, the ends justify the means.

RE: GOP Is worthlessness

Well, looking at it objectively, I only fault the two Republicans who voted NO.

The rest of the votes were along party lines.

I mean, if you were a GOP Senator, what more could you do other than to vote to DEFUND?

If there aren’t enough votes to reach the requisite 60, it simply means that we need to vote in more Senators who would vote YES.

If Ben Carson could get into some black churches to preach about baby harvesting and get the church attendees to ask their elected representatives what they think about baby harvesting, the Democrat opposition would fall away like a wall of leaves.

McConnell voted NO at the end in order to bring the legislation up again.

That is a standard tactic used in the Senate.

We have to make life very uncomfortable for Democrats.

They are the party of death, abortion, Nazism, fascism, killing jobs, keeping people on the government plantation.

It took Wilbur Wilberforce 20 years to prevail against the slave trade, in Parliament.

This is a first skirmish.

The battle is not over.

It’s a charade. For every Democrat who would be a potential 60th vote, a Republican would vote “no”.

You would need at least 20 Democrats voting yes to pass this bill, and 25 or so to overturn the veto.

As long as f***ing their brains out is the most important consideration for the American voter, abortion in all its forms is invulnerable.

Had all Republicans voted in favor, we still would not be able to get the requisite 60 votes to stop a Filibuster...

Exactly, but some in here obviously expected a miracle

May I ask a question here?

Every PP abortion patient is forced after the abortion to come back in and choose a birth control method, which is then sold or the prescription is given. NOT A SINGLE ABORTION PATIENT is allowed to avoid the birth control situation. Doesn't that affect the stats of "women's health services" they provide?

In addition to that, they may provide pregnancy testing that is cheaper than the pharmacy sticks. Maybe free, for all I know. Some of those women scared and getting tested will NOT be pregnant. Those women are also probably pushed to getting birth control from PP.

Once these facts are known, don't their stats of "providing women's health care" other than abortion make more sense? Outside of abortion patients, not a lot of people go there to seek out other women's health care. People need to understand this. Probably (guessing) 90% of the "birth control care" provided by PP is TO THEIR ABORTION PATIENTS.

Actually the vote was for letting it go forward and since the Republicans didn’t get the 60 votes they needed it got stopped right there.

The PP pie chart on their website shows abortions to be 3% of their services. That is bunk. Here is why (quoting from lifesite news)

So Planned Parenthood tries to walk a “fine line,” not relegating its abortion business to secrecy, but diminishing the role it plays. Therein lies the genius of the “3 percent of services” claim—a sham statistic, but one that Planned Parenthood has been incredibly successful in selling to the American public.

To arrive at that 3 percent figure, Planned Parenthood does some fudging and misdirection. Planned Parenthood depreciates the role abortion plays by defining its “services” in such a way that it avoids accounting for their time and expense. A single pregnancy test is designated by Planned Parenthood as a “service” and thus given equal weight to a far more time-consuming and expensive surgical abortion procedure, another Planned Parenthood “service.” Likewise, each pack of birth control pills is considered a service and carries the same weight in the calculation as an abortion. Using this rubric, Planned Parenthood justifies the claim the President of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, has made that abortion is, “a very small part of what we do.” [v]

It’s the hugest profit they have though, $99 million dollars. Let’s see a pie chart of where they get their money. It’s not from the pregnancy tests or packs of pills.

LOOK FOLKS, THIS FAILURE WAS PLANNED by McConnell. It’s the reason that McConnell would not allow Cruz to do the defunding by amendment (which would only have required 51 votes).

[SENATOR MARK KIRK did not have compassion to extend mercy to the unborn. However, he was thankful for a second chance at life.]

01/02/2013 - Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), who will return to Congress on Thursday one year after suffering a major stroke, said that he saw angels while recovering in the hospital last year.

In an interview with the Daily Herald published Wednesday, Kirk said that before he woke up from a medically induced coma, three angels appeared at the foot of his bed and asked if he wanted to come with them.

“No,” Kirk said. “I’ll hold off.”

“I would say that I definitely became much more religious,” Kirk said. “They say there are no atheists in foxholes, and this stroke put me into a very deep foxhole. Yet, that feeling of faith sustained me, so I have no feelings of anger or regret.”
