One of two men suspected of making off with a bag containing $150,000 in cash that was mistakenly left behind by ATM workers bought an SUV with the money hours later, police said.

Alton Harvey, 42, of Hillside, was arrested Wednesday after police traced a white van that was captured on surveillance video pulling up to the bag of cash that the ATM employees forgot outside a business in Mahwah, in northern New Jersey, on Monday. The video showed a passenger in the van grabbing the bag.

I read about this. Earlier when the crime was reported I contended it had to be an inside job. Apparently not. Evidently the stupid was strong in this crime.

But I was wrong. I've been wrong before. I was wrong when I held my nose and voted for John McCain. And I was wrong about this crime. Apologies.

"HILLARY CLINTON is working on his release, despite protests about FindersKeepers privlege!"

Of course the release will be followed by a unconnected generous donation to the Clinton Foundation .

Should have bought an airplane ticket for someplace far away and a big supply of sunblock and drinks with little umbrellas instead.

HILLARY CLINTON is working on his release, despite protests about FindersKeepers privilege !

So, before he bought the car he made a 'donation' to the witch's foundation?

I used to fix and reload ATM’s. They would have a stash of cash in them for reloading but there was a maximum limit. One time my partner and I (It was always two people) found $80k in a machine. We were required to report it because it was too much.

But most (but not all) of these machines shared a wall with an actual bank branch. You never even had to visit the customer facing area.

To be clear, we never brought money with us. That was someone else’s job, and it looks like the “someone else” is who screwed up here.

To be a tiny bit fair, when you work with cash this way, you don’t see it as money. You see it the same way a vending machine owner sees the pop cans he’s stuffing into his machines.

At least, you had BETTER see it that way. If you get hung up on the sheer quantity of money you are handling, you really need to find another job, for your own well being.

Problem is, you find that you don’t respect it as much as someone else would, and you might accidentally leave a bag of it hanging around. ;-)

Pretty much every public place these days is covered by surveillance cameras. I’m sure the second suspect will be rounded up very shortly.

“Police said the van was seen in another video pulling into a nearby auto repair business and pilfering used tires.”

I’ve always said the best way to judge the quality of a neighborhood is to count the used tire stores per capita. Of course, now another indicator is the number of “pay day check cashing” stores per capita.

Harvey was held on $125,000 bail, charged with theft of mislaid property. It was not known if he has a lawyer who can comment on the charge.

He obviously took something he knew didn’t belong to him, but not by force, coercion or deception. They might have a problem making those charges stick.

Yeah, when my partner and I found that 80k in an ATM we were repairing, I asked her how far we could get before we had to come back to get real jobs again. We decided the Piña coladas would be too expensive on any of the really GOOD beaches.

At the time, that was a lot of money, btw...
