Would you let your 12-year-old daughter sleep in a tent with an 18-year-old boy?

I was driving in to work earlier this week, listening to a local talk show, when I did something I almost never do. I called in.

The subject was the decision by the governing board of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to allow openly gay adults to serve as den leaders, scoutmasters, and camp counselors. How could I resist? I am an Eagle Scout, and I have a book coming out next week called Scarlet Letters that deals with this larger subject.

When the producer screened me about my stance, I decided to hold off on more complex issues like freedom of assembly and the historical scout requisite to be “morally straight” and focus instead on the pragmatic.

I told him that as an Eagle Scout, I can attest to the cross-generational intimacy of the scouting experience. Young boys, older teens, and men share a lot of private time. They swim together, shower together, sleep in the same tents together. On the everyday level, I told him, I would worry about the Jerry Sandusky factor.

The producer flipped. “Are you saying that all gays are pedophiles?” he shot back angrily. “No,” I said, “but would you let your twelve-year-old daughter sleep in a tent with an eighteen-year-old boy?”

He didn’t get my drift, so I had to explain it. For a man to find an adolescent sexually attractive is not pedophilia. It is human nature. Pedophilia means an attraction to pre-pubescent children, eleven or younger. To join the BSA, a boy must be at least eleven. The Scouts have always encouraged older adolescents to assume intermediate leadership positions. So it would not be unusual for an eighteen-year-old to share a tent with twelve- and thirteen-year-olds.

The logic here would be letting your 12 year old son sleep in a tent within earshot of 2 men rutting in the next tent

Exactly, and precautions are taken for people of the opposite gender as a normal measure in a lot of situations. Guess some people don’t really want equality, or simply want to deny that certain people can do any wrong.

It would take three generations of brain washing (The brain DOES need to be cleansed of filth) to get back to the 1950's

There may be more truth to that than you realize. Sexual predilections, being as powerful and hormonal as they are, induce environmental stresses that may be physically heritable. They could produce changes in messenger RNA (not DNA) that are referred to collectively as "epigenetics," physically heritable traits (including behavioral) that are not in DNA. I remember an amazing experiment with stickleback fish behavior that showed environmentally induced behavioral effects to be sufficient to cross the species barrier even in hybridized progeny.

I’m no supporter of BSA. The volunteers are great but management of the organization is toxic.

I was a Scoutmaster who left in January 2014 to form a Trail Life USA troop.

But, at no time may an adult share a tent with a youth, unless it is the boys father.

I do believe BSA is setting themselves up for major failure and the heartache of boys who will be molested by homosexual predators as a result of this decision. However, in very few instances will it be in camp.

Camp will be the place where trolling and recruiting occurs. The actual crime will be perpetrated outside of the camp setting.

This was a horrible and unforgivable decision by BSA and they will pay the price.

Other scouting organizations like Trail Life USA will reap some benefits. Sadly, the real losers will be the boys whose parents choose to not enroll them in any outdoor adventure program.

The percent supporting “rights” is WAY MORE THAN TWO PERCENT. Then there’s the major corporate sponsors or people willing to buy fundraiser items, and it’s not a small number either way.

My previous post’s closing sentence should have already answered you but the answer is no. The BSA choice about youth membership standards two years ago was wrong and the adult membership standard is wrong today. It wasn’t that long ago I was going camping with a troop as an adult leader so I can tell you two things: the kids segregate pretty much naturally by age and smart adult leaders organize patrols by age. Outside of siblings, I can’t recall any tent mixing among differences like high school with middle school.

I think you’ve arrived at about the only conclusion that can be drawn and I’ll say it’s definitely a false assumption because basic human nature says otherwise. Good comment on the 2%, too.

The 2% is a generally accepted understanding of the proportion of homosexuals within the overall population. You are correct that there is a large group fellow travelers that are granting excess power to this small group due to their ability to catch media coverage.

He didn’t get my drift,

I really find it hard to believe that "liberals" don't get this. I really believe they're being intentionally > 90 degrees.

So it would not be unusual for an eighteen-year-old to share a tent with twelve- and thirteen-year-olds.

Not in our troop. We allow no more than a two or three-year gap between ages of kids in tents.

Amazingly, I understood everything you just said ... /8^)

I was thinking about all the conditioning processes that are in place;

The queer TV programming,
lisping newscasters;
man hating/denegrating commercials;

etc.

Why should an 18 year old be sharing a tent with a 13 year old, isn’t that a bit weird anyway?

Not at all weird, when pairings require economy.

But forget the age disparity. What about two 15-year-olds? Would you let a 15-year-old boy sleep in the same tent with your 15-year-old daughter?

Uhuh.

And that was a genius who said he was “conservative” in the same conversation about how awesome it was that his offspring got a part as a lesbian in a play at “college”.

“but but it’s a part”

What a load of rationalized manure.

You must be referring to the PC Battalions, whose PC police far outnumber the, in comparison, miniscule homosexual squad.

I’d make them at least sleep in threes. A lot more difficult to rape/molest someone when there are three people instead of two.

The point is, why have to worry about this at all?

Because that’s just how the world is. Some people are sexual predators and there is no point in taking what seems to be an unneccessary risk of some closet paedophile molesting a younger boy.

In todays liberal and godless world, common sense is totally absent and is actually scorned.

The author did a good job in comparing the new boy scout standards to those of the Catholic Church in the last 10-50 years. Failure to weed out gays in the priesthood early on, only served to spread it throughout the clergy as more and more of the gay priests were elevated to bishops or abbots. Such a situation is ripe for abuse and for blackmail. Bishops who were themselves implicated in any previous transgression faced threats from underlings of exposure if anyone was disciplined. And so the cancer of homosexuality spread in the church clergy.

It is actually quite amazing that there were not more gay men in the clergy. But, those who were not gay began to lose their voices as higher ups were silent or sympathetic to gays.

Goodbye Boy Scouts of America. So Sad.

Definitely, the PC police are pretty good, or pretty intimidating, to most of the population.
