Just Punishment--Jonathan Pollard was one of the worst traitors of the 20th century
Slate ^ | July 29, 2015 | By Fred Kaplan

Jonathan Pollard, who’s been in prison the past 30 years for selling secrets to Israel, will be released on parole this November. Two things are worth noting. First, contrary to many skeptics, his release is not a political ploy to relax Israel’s opposition to the Iran nuclear deal. Second, contrary to claims by Pollard’s supporters, his punishment has been completely justified; he ranks as one of the 20th century’s most appalling American spies.

The first myth is easy to puncture. Pollard’s life sentence came with a mandatory-parole clause after 30 years. He started serving time in November 1985. So, 30 years is up in November 2015. It’s math.

The second myth takes longer to unravel. At his sentencing hearing, Pollard, who’d been a U.S. Navy intelligence official, painted himself as a devout Jew who’d stolen classified documents dealing only with Arab military might in order to help Israel stave off an invasion; none of his actions, he claimed, harmed American security.

Judge Aubrey Robinson Jr. called Pollard to the bench, showed him a classified affidavit that the Department of Defense had submitted, listing the range of sensitive secrets that he’d stolen, pointed to one of the items, and said, “What about this?” Pollard was silenced. Robinson sentenced him to life.

We now know (and M.E. Bowman, a senior counterintelligence officer who was working the Pollard case, has since confirmed) that the item in question was a National Security Agency manual called the RASIN, short for “Radio Signal Notations.” The RASIN was a guide to the physical parameters of every radio signal that the NSA was intercepting—a guide on how the NSA was tracking military communications, not just Israel’s but any and every country’s, including the Soviet Union’s. The RASIN was 10 volumes, and Pollard gave his Israeli. . .

I’m a huge supporter of Israel but I have no problem with him being locked up.

And I don’t like the way this country is treating Israel these days, especially, but it’s two separate matters.

The real problem is the Iran “deal” brought to us by Kerry and co. Especially for Israel.

when some one betrays the us intelligence agency national security suffers. pollard should stay right where he is. Israel is are friend but Israel has to look at its intelligence needs first and the Masad would use this intelligence in an instant against us if it felt that Israel’s security was in jeopardy.

...he ranks as one of the 20th century’s most appalling American spies.

Incorrect slate! The most appalling and still dangerous spies were and are bill and hillary clinton for their Chinagate treason. And we can include filthbag Sandy Berger as a close third.

If “Slate” is against Pollard then he must be a good guy (especially considering how our current government is treating Israel).

The Walker spy ring was bad. I thought Ethel and Julius caused a whole lot of damage too.

“...... his punishment has been completely justified; he ranks as one of the 20th century’s most appalling American spies.”.....

The reason for such a high rating for Pollard is, odumbo hasn’t been rated yet. IMO, odumbo is the greatest spy this world and country will ever see. Worse, he is openly telling and showing his intent and no one seems to be listening.

Pollard reportedly admitted to selling materials that could fill a 10-foot by 6-foot by 6-foot space to the Israeli Intelligence, from where, it is claimed some intelligence specialists believe that the Soviet moles then passed those secrets along to Moscow. If that’s true, that (having a Soviet mole in its midst) is a black eye for Mossad, which is alleged to be among the best intelligence agencies in the world. And yes, Pollard should have been executed. But then, John A. Walker (perhaps the most damaging spy in US history)was allowed to live.

The number of disloyal Americans is beyond our capacity to recall.

To paraphrase the late Richard Milhous Nixon (who later shunned use of his unusual middle name, and I know it was Hannah’s maiden name), people have to believe their president is not a spy!

I think learning what they disclosed and to whom

Trumps severity of punishment

Course once that would meant clean blade death over slow eviscerating

John A. Walker (perhaps the most damaging spy in US history)was allowed to live.

Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen were also allowed to live.

The whole lot should have been strung up.

[If “Slate” is against Pollard then he must be a good guy (especially considering how our current government is treating Israel).]

Pollard was a racketeer posing as an altruist.

From Wikipedia:

Prior to Pollard’s plea bargain, the U.S. government began preparing a multi-count criminal indictment on him, which included drug, and tax-fraud charges along with espionage.[8] The government’s indictment included allegations that Pollard used classified documents to unsuccessfully broker an arms deal with the governments of South Africa, Argentina, and Taiwan.[8] FBI investigators also determined that Pollard met with three Pakistanis and an Iranian foreigner in an attempt to broker arms in 1985.[8]

Yes. 2 of Walkers cohorts got stiffer sentences than he did. Because Walker sang. No surprise if a Pollard didn’t debrief. He sounds like a true believer. Walker had no ideology. He just wanted cash.
