The Republican presidential contest has grown to 17 candidates with Wednesday's entry of Jim Gilmore.
The former Virginia governor told The Associated Press earlier this month that he would announce his candidacy in early August. On Wednesday, he filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.
Gilmore, a former Army intelligence officer, completed one term as governor in 2002.

Obituary building.
Wow, top seventeen. There must be some fancy accounting that justifies this.
That a former RNC head with no chance of accomplishing anything as a candidate, declares as a candidate tells us somthing about the quality of the people at the RNC.
I’m waiting for Harold Stassen to jump in.
Why?
Another yawnable.
He might get a 1%, but even that is doubtful.
There’s still room for Mitt Romney!
The RNC is headed for a genuine convention negotiated candidate. Somebody needs to start reading up on convention rules when there is no clear electoral primary winner.
Gilmore will go far . . . and I hope soon!
He’s figuring VA will be a crucial swing state and that will buy him a VP spot on someone’s ticket.
Good point. As I understand it, delegates are pledged to vote for their pledged candidate on the 1st ballot. If no candidate has a majority after the 1st ballot, delegates are no.longer bound to that candidate. Then back room deals and horse trading and arm twisting will.happen.
50% chance of a brokered convention.
That would pretty much be a lock for Bush, right?
Good. Pataki & Grahamnesty need company in tier 4.
He was utterly slaughtered running for the Senate in 2008, and as a first-tier candidate got only 1/3rd(!) of the vote against Democrat Mark Warner (34%). He would be of no help to any GOP candidate running for President as a VP nominee.
Whoopie do.
I wonder just who’s funding/furthering this mess? So many candidates is a joke.
Sad statement on the quality of our "politicians."
Gilmore isn’t gonna be a factor in the race.
A “brokered convention” is exceedingly unlikely, someone will win. A few of these chumps won’t even make it till Iowa, more will be culled after Iowa and NH.
