Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders took a surprising line on immigration in a recent interview, denouncing higher immigration levels as a right-wing Koch brothers proposal.
Sanders was being interviewed by Ezra Klein of Vox, who pointed out that Sanders self-proclaimed socialist beliefs typically entailed taking a more international view of politics. The implications of that point of view, Klein suggested, include things like sharply raising the level of immigration we permit, even up to a level of open borders.
Absolutely not, Sanders replied.
Open borders? No, thats a Koch brothers proposal, he said. Thats a right-wing proposal, which says essentially there is no United States What right-wing people in this country would love is an open-border policy.
Klein countered by saying heavier immigration would allow the global poor to become richer, but Sanders said that could only come at the expense of existing American workers.
You know what youth unemployment is in the United States of America today? he said. If youre a white high school graduate, its 33 percent, Hispanic 36 percent, African American 51 percent. You think we should open the borders and bring in a lot of low-wage workers, or do you think maybe we should try to get jobs for those kids?
I think from a moral responsibility weve got to work with the rest of the industrialized world to address the problems of international poverty, but you dont do that by making people in this country even poorer, he continued.

Somebody pinch me ... connect the dots ... Trump can win ...
Or ... Anyhow, If I were a betting man (I’m not, except for the occasional scratchy) I’d bet Trump v. Sanders, 2016.
Wow. Bernie Sanders makes a more effective argument against open borders than any GOP candidate. Including Trump.
Go, Bernie!
(And no, I don’t want him to be president.)
He is just reading the inside polls of his party.
Bernie is an admitted socialist.
In the grand tradition of the Kremlin, if his lips are moving you know he’s lying.
Yeah. There have been some real works of art on FR who say they will vote for Sanders simply because of his stance on immigration. I know most are being dramatic to make a point, but some you have to wonder about.
But then, Hell, I would vote for the guy if I was in one of my “bring it all down around us and faster is better” moods, so I have no room to talk.
So now Sanders is to the right of the GOP on immigration. Amazing.
“So now Sanders is to the right of the GOP on immigration. Amazing.”
No; Sanders is making the left-Democrat argument that unskilled legal and illegal immigrants are taking jobs from an important element of the Democrat base: unskilled blacks and youth.
OMG Someone gets it. Since Bernie is not a Democrat he doesn’t care about more Democrat voters.
But I did specify that it'd be the event Jeb Bush, or any other candidate who would give 20-30 million illegals a 'path to citizenship', was the GOP's nominee.
There will be no recovering from that.
I’ll vote for Sanders over Jeb.
The open-borders crowd is an unholy alliance among libertarians, the Chamber-of-Commerce/GOP-e types, and cynical Democrats who see in unskilled immigrants a growth factor for their party.
o no no - I’ve said for a long time now - and so many here say the same - BOTH parties betray the working people of America... and Main St - small business.
I said before Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump sound an awful lot alike... not because Trump is a poseur, but because he’s a Teddy Roosevelt Republican - it’s hard to remember a time when the GOP stood for the values of Main St, small farmers, workers, -
Hell as mayor of New York, Teddy Roosevelt personally oversaw the FREE DISTRIBUTION OF ICE - on the streets of New York, - not just for people but for the animals.
The GOP is not and should not be the party of Boehner and his masters on Wall St. The Koch Brothers are not our friend. They care for no one but their own and their holdings.
Even THEIR own are in danger of being redundant. Can you imagine being a wife, or child of such monsters?
Actually Sanders is acknowledging that open borders and immigration hurts the lower and middle class. That is something the GOP refuses to acknowledge.
The GOP could care less about the people. They are only concerned with keeping their lobbyist donors happy.
The GOP has become what the Left said it is.

Young high-school graduates just coming into the job market (whether they are white, black, or Hispanic) are not middle class. With a set of skills, hard work, and determination, they may one day become middle class.
The Stupid Party, led by the Chamber of Commerce, wants to increase legal immigration and double the guest worker programs. Really dumb.
