American Hunter Killed Cecil, Beloved Lion That Was Lured Out of Its Sanctuary
New York Times ^ | July 28, 2015 | By KATIE ROGERS

Cecil, a 13-year-old lion, wandered out of his sanctuary in a national park in Zimbabwe this month, following the scent of a potential snack.

At the other end of Cecil’s search was a lure, placed there by hunters who, conservationists say, wanted their prey to cross into unprotected territory so they could kill him.

Cecil, well known to those who visited the Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe for his jet black mane, was beheaded, according to conservation officials. His corpse was left to rot in the sun.

Zimbabwean officials said that Dr. Walter J. Palmer, an American hunter known for killing big game with a bow and arrow, killed Cecil, and was being sought on poaching charges.

Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Cecil was lured out of a protected game preserve one night in early July by a hunting party that tied a dead animal to a car.

The first shot, which the authorities say came from Dr. Palmer’s crossbow, was not enough to kill the lion. Cecil was tracked for nearly two days before Dr. Palmer killed him with a gun. . .

The fact is they lured Cecil out of his protected area. I heard Savage yesterday talking about this. It seems Cecil and another male were protecting the pride - a female with her 2 cubs. Some on here are equating this to PP. They are apples and oranges. Apparently, Cecil ran for 2 days with an arrow in him, then they shot him after tracking him down. They skinned him and took his head. This is sick, and makes me sick too. I hope they throw the book at these poachers.

Well I’m not anti-hunter but to intentionally lure a protected beast off a reserve seems very cruel and unsportsmanlike.

The US can prosecute him for violating other countries poaching laws.

“Sounds to me that that the P.H. was a jacka$$.”

I think that’s where most of the fault lies. He certainly would recognize “cecil” and be aware he was collared, yet he let the hunter shoot him anyway. It is also his responsibility to know the local hunting regulations and what species it is legal to take on the property and make sure all the permits are in place.

That being said I think the hunter is being unfairly attacked and is entitled to some defense. Bow hunters often hunt over bait since it allows them to get closer to the animals since the range of their weapon is limited. Many handgun hunters do the same. This is not considered unethical in the US or elsewhere.

I despise trophy hunters and trophy fishermen; I always have. To me, the senseless killing of an animal for 'sport', or to satisfy some jerk's ego ranks right up there on my list of hate crimes.
To those sanctimonious jerks who take it upon themselves to throw down the abortion gauntlet and try to decide what bothers me and what does not, I would say foff; this is a thread about a hunter killing a lion and nothing else.

Me too. I used to go hunting, but I simply cannot do it anymore. I love to shoot. I am at the range once a week. If a lion was attacking me, I could shoot it ( and probably miss.). But to pay $50k? That’s not in my blood.

I always told my boys when we would go hunting, “eat it or
wear it”.

I see the New York Times couldn’t resist tossing the word ‘American’ into the headline.

I don't approve of big game "trophy" hunting since it seems like a real waste just to satisfy big egos, but it is legal. This guy apparently is a longtime hunter, and based on the stories I've read, it appears he either knowingly or unknowingly hired some unscrupulous guides, who were paid a lot of money to make sure he got his lion.

At any rate, what he did is hardly new...

Do #CecilTheLion fans asking Mugabe for justice know he ate a baby elephant for his 91st birthday?

There is nothing sporting about luring collared semi-tame lion out of its sanctuary and then shooting it.

This dentists is an idiot who has done similar things in the past and who has a questionable history in his own practise.

Idiots like him discredit a noble sport.

One of the problems is that the guy was a bad shot. He used a bow & arrow and after the cat was illegally drawn out of the park, he was seriously injured and suffered through the night before being killed the next day. This is pretty disgusting in my book and most hunters might agree. He needs to face up to the law but not be harassed at his home. That lion was beautiful.

Why is this getting more press than Planned Parenthood slaughter children and selling body parts? I’m horrified that there is any controversy whatsoever while these PP demons are walking free.

Is it getting more press? The British press is all over it for two reasons: they love animals far more than little children and 2 they get to excoriate Americans - their national sport.

What to do with a British friend who we Americans wined and dined last year for two weeks straight who now is calling for the murder of this man because not only is he a nasty guy, he’s an American? As they would say: what cheek!

Bingo.
Human babies are being chopped up to make cosmetics.

This is just an animal. Not comparable.

While I’m not a fan of the method this hunt was conducted, its certainly no worse than the way its traditionally done in Africa.

The Masai are known as the greatest hunter/trackers in Africa. Their traditional method of hunting big game was to run the animals to death for days with inflicting repeated superficial wounds.

Can’t say it better than this:

“Tragic...

... thousands more die at the hands of abortionists and Islam without notice.”

As it stands, if the lion was outside protected land it is fair game. Lures are a common item in hunting, as it makes hunting easier.

It may be surprising to you, but actually, a large number of people can multi-task—voice disgust about PP, AND the killing of Cecil.
