China aghast as woman crushed by escalator at shopping mall

The scene can only be described as horrific: On an otherwise unremarkable morning, a woman is riding up a shopping center escalator in central China with her son. When she reaches the top and begins to disembark, she steps onto a metal footplate covering the machinery. The plate collapses, dropping the woman into the gears. She shoves her child into the arms of two mall employees, and is crushed to death.

Security-camera video of the incident (Note: The video contains disturbing images.) hit Chinese social media late Sunday, hours after it occurred, with local media identifying the woman as Xiang Liujuan, 30. In a rapidly urbanizing country still plagued by shoddy construction standards and poor building maintenance, the news spread like wildfire.

Hmmm, other articles played up the fact that she saved her son.

Why would you watch the video in the first place? What is the point?

It looked like they knew there was a maintenance issue, and two female employees were at the top as the woman and her child came up. The child's father was the smart one, staying at the bottom. It appears the woman stepped on the escalator despite a warning notice that it was being worked on.

Looks like negligence by the store, they should not have allowed anyone on it until fixed and tested. The top access plate was not properly secured. If true, it should have been roped off until secured.

In any case, a horrific video to watch as the poor woman was pulled into the machinery.

I was just watching Telemundo and they played the entire thing without warning!

I seem to recall something similar happening a few years ago in China with an escalator.

I’ve always been very skittish on escalators. My family laughs at me, but I don’t like them and avoid them if possible.

Poor woman, RIP, she saved her son, that was very good.

That is truly horrifying.

I don’t think it was too long ago a woman was decapitated by an elevator there.

Did you see the video? I've heard of accidents where shoelaces and such get caught in the grooves, and mangle children's feet. But I never gave a second thought to stepping off onto the top plate, that it could collapse! Good grief, talk about wrong place and wrong time for someone to be.

Being a somewhat exercise nut, I always take the stairs unless it is too hot and avoiding getting lathered up.

This emphasizes the wisdom of stairs over those damn escalators. Never did like that things even as a kid.

Why am I reminded of a meat grinder?

Sorry, could not resist, troglodyte that I am.

Same thing happened in New Delhi airport a few years back. They left out screwing down the end plate.

Man, that happened so quick.

I am surprised that she was even able to hand off the baby before meeting an horrific end.

I see people asking what is the point of watching the video, and all I can say is that I had no idea that someone could die that fast on an escalator.

I think I have a brand new phobia.

The thing is in China, they will probably wind up executing whomever they think was responsible.

Nor did I.

I have heard the same about being pulled under by shoelace, but I had no clue something like this could happen.

That is absolutely frightening.
