Amnesty for all Bush is courting latino’s.

Based on his poll numbers, it appears that is the only base he’s got.

I’ve heard he’s pandered by wanting to make Puerto Rico the 51st state.

Is there any reason to take an island, an island which is far poorer than the poorest American state, an island which is culturally and linguistically very different from most of America, and making it into a state??? This idea has been tossed around for decades. We are told that Puerto Rico should either become independent or become a state. And I always wonder why the status quo should change.

Nobody ever talks about Guam or the Virgin Islands or American Samoa becoming states. Yet there is this fixation with Puerto Rico becoming a state. Why?

Nobody is serious about statehood for Puerto Rico. Ford, Reagan, and both Bushes all said they were in favor because the GOP affiliate on the island, the New Progressive Party, is the pro-statehood party, but nobody really pushed for statehood. Even though Puerto Rico doesn’t vote in the presidential election, they have delegates in the political conventions, and nobody wants to antagonize them.

IIRC, the people of PR voted statehood down not that long ago. I believe having to pay federal taxes was the deal stopper.

Well, if the people there don’t really want statehood, that should end the discussion right there.

If I recall correctly, in both Alaska and Hawaii, there was overwhelming support for statehood for many years before they became states. And that there were groups in both states writing constitutions, and doing other tasks to get ready for statehood. There were votes by the people overwhelmingly supporting becoming states.

It seems like none of this is happening in Puerto Ricans. Rather, mainland politicians talk about the idea, without the Puerto Ricans themselves even wanting statehood. How strange.

The problem is, if they went independent, everyone would flee the island before Independence took effect to keep their US Citizenship.

Puerto Ricans have voted against statehood more than once, they don’t want the taxes.

Amnesty for all was a general term I used to describe Bush, in general.

Not strange at all - especially the last 7 years. Pols are always telling us they know what's best for us.

That's old news. Puerto Rico actually voted in favor of statehood three years ago but Congress wont do anything about it because the territory is a basketcase.

Jebbie must think Puerto Ricans are illegal aliens..

or he wouldn’t bother with them..

theyre just like Tennesseans...theyre American citizens..theyre born Americans ..of American parents, grandparents back to 1898..

Theyre NBC any of them could be the president of the United States..

Theres nothing there to fight for Jebbie..they have it all already..
